FYI: Getting tax info from IRS

One of the reasons I never make the April 15th filing date is I want to
make sure that my 1099s & W-2s match what the IRS has so I wait till they get
their run (used to be around Sep, this yr it was Jun) & have them print
out copies for me. Usually every yr, I have at least one item that IRS
doesn't have (I include it anyway) but sometimes there's one that I didn't have.
Like last yr, IRS had 4 W-2s from Peppermill that all were $20 or less. I
asked IRS if I should include it because these were obvious errors by
Peppermill (probably left off 2 decimals when typing it). They said to include it
to avoid any flags.

Anyway, I learned that IRS has a system to obtain forms which is accessed
online or phone call.

1. Online:
     a. _www.irs.gov_ (http://www.irs.gov)
     b. Click on ORDER A TAX RETURN or ACCOUNT TRANSCRIPT

2. Call 800-908-9946 & follow prompts

3. Mail - IRS form 4506-T or from 4506-T-EZ (Request for Transcript of
Tax Return)

Thank you. You just saved me a half-hour a year.

The online ordering of transcripts is fairly new but very effective. I am a bankruptcy lawyer and I have clients order these at least a couple times each month. They will arrive by mail within two weeks of the request.

If you owe money and don't file by 4/15 you will owe a penalty and interest. Be very sure you are due refunds from Federal and state before using this approach. I just keep track of my W-2s and 1099s and get my refunds without a problem.

Not true. You can send a check with your extension and file in October.

Copied below is TedChee's informative email from last year re requesting w-2g confirmation from the IRS. I'm adding brief comment based on my experience this year:

Ted outlines three means for a request. Of these, I found "online" ineffective.

The necessary transcript includes w-2 detail, and can be obtained via a "Wage & Income Transcript". You can request this by phone (as he notes, typically not available until late summer), Or by mailed form request.

However, I couldn't find this transcript available by online request; the only transcript requests I located were a "Return Transcript" (details content of a filed return) and an "Account Transcript" (details any liability and subsequent payments/adjustments). Neither will detail w-2g's for an unfiled return.

Aside from this minor "detour", TedChee's post is both helpful and appreciated!
