The big answer is... all doubts about the fairness of online sites
(player cheating, owners cheating, etc) are perfectly reasonable
theoretically. But I've been playing for years, & making money. As with
VP, not amounts I could live on, but it's just nice to have hobbies
with a positive cash flow at all. Considering that I make a profit,
that I'm not particularly brilliant, & that I play for relaxation
(which is to say that I'll play in states of extreme distraction, 2 or
3 games at once with the TV on & talking on the phone & checking email
& altering my consciousness simultaneously), the practical evidence
suggests that whoever is cheating must be doing so at higher limits
than I play, or is cheating very poorly. <<<
I think you're not considering a few methods of cheating that would be
virtually undetectable. Consider three people (or three "avatars" of
the same person) who are online in the same game simultaneously. At the
very least, each of them will see four other cards before making a
decision. Examples of how this could help:
I am going to raise with QQ but I notice that my other two selves
are holding Q3 and Q7. Instead of raising, I fold.
I play AJ of hearts, but my other two selves also have two hearts. So
when the flop comes heart-heart-x without an A or J I muck my hand,
rather than chasing a flush I know is very unlikely to get there. I am
holding JJ and the flop come 3JK. I raise and am reraised; but my
avatars have folded K5 and K8, so I can reraise with impunity, KNOWING
I have the best hand.
In cases like these the actions of the person with extra knowledge
would never come under scrutiny. I would estimate that a %-10% edge
would be conferred just by seeing four unseen cards (two other hands).
And of course, there's the nightmare scenario where one person is
controlling SEVEN or more hands....
