Actually, I think they may use jamming equipment. I've noticed many
times (only in sport books) signs and screen messages warning people
not to use electronic devices. I think it has something to do with
betters in different casinos comparing odds. I'm not much into
sports betting, so I'm not absolutely certain about this. Of course,
casinos can't stop this entirely, but they can make it more
difficult.
It's probably not so much "jamming equipment" per se, but all of the
electronic and computer equipment that are found in a modern casino.
These generate signals that often interefere with cellular signals.
Concrete and steel (often used in combination in casino walls) will
also hurt your signal.
Using phones in sporta books is supposed to be either against
regulations or outright illegal. It goes back to attempts to prohibit
people from calling couriers or bookies at sports books, in an effort
to prevent people from placing bets from areas where it isn't allowed.
I've seen signs at the Stardust sports book warning against using
phones in the area near the windows. The same sort of thing was/is
done at race tracks for many years, though my track here in Birmingham
has pay phones near the betting windows.
