It would seem that way. But, there is marginal correlation in
lung cancer rates (and cancer rates in general) and living in
smoggy cities. There is a huge correlation between smoking and
lung cancer rates and heart disease rates.
The correlation between lung cancer and heart disease rates are for
smokers, not those affected by ETS, Environmental Tobacco Smoke.
Studies are beginning to appear that show ETS to be similar to smog
in it's effects on non-smokers.
Thanks Tigger! Not trying to nitpick on the smoking/exhaust
thing, but I think it's a crucial point. Most smokers rationalize
that smoking is OK because so many different things can cause
cancer. It's important to make the distinction: many things MIGHT
(as in extreme longshot) give you cancer; smoking has a very good
chance (as in coin flip) of giving you cancer.
I don't know many smokers that rationalize their habit based on the
perceived health risks versus something else. I guess my observations
have been a bit different than yours.
Though you are correct. Being a smoker certainly ups the possibilty
of getting a "smoking related" disease, just like being a coal miner
ups your possibilty of getting "miner's lung".
