Hello,
The two cases are very different. Let me see how I would explain this
to a Casino Virgin.
Case 1. In all probability you will be playing five coins on a cent,
nickel, quarter or dollar machine. It is very unlikely you will find
other denominations. The most you can expect to win in one play is,
then, $40, $200, $1,000 or $4,000, respectively. This might not
happen for days or weeks, even if you play ten hours a day, every
day. Your chances of winning one of those jackpots are roughly one in
40,000. You have knowledge of the payback and volatility of the
machine, so you can safely make a roughly approximate estimate of the
cost per day of gambling those ten hours. If you are industrious and
have the time, leisure and inclination to play steadily for a very
long time, it is fairly certain that you will make some money, though
that is by no means assured. You will have to remember some rules of
strategy in order to hold the proper cards, thus you should not drink
too much alcohol, it will cause you to make mistakes. Yes, you will
be dealing with cards, cybercards. Thus you must look at the monitor
constantly, which can be taxing on your sight. It is best to play
fast, and thus reap more riches; therefore it is to your advantage to
develop a two-hand style of gambling. It will not hurt to practice
playing the piano on your off days.
Case 2. You will be playing quarters or dollars, three at a time. You
will definitely not deal with other denominations. The most you can
expect to win in QuarterMania is hundreds of thousands of dollars,
millions of dollars in Megabucks. This might not happen in your
lifetime, the chances are comparable to winning the lotto. You can
figure out your cost of playing by knowing how fast you play, thus
how many coins you put in per hour. You can safely guess you get back
90%, ballpark figure. "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man
healthy, wealthy and wise" will in all probability not work with
these machines in the most likely case that you never hit the top
jackpot, thus you should adopt the philosophy that you are paying for
entertainment. You will deal with machines that you don't have to
look at; and if you do, you will see reels, thus saving your sight.
You will not deal with cards at all, no need to pay attention to any
detail or learn any strategy. You will be dealing with Double
Diamonds, Triple Diamonds, Double Diamonds DeLuxe, Five Pay, Red
White and Blue, Diablo, Texas Tea, etc. You will encounter noises and
hear funny sentences like "I'm Armadillo, I mean Amarillo
" "Diablo!
Diablo!", etc. You can, if you want, forget about the machine and
concentrate on catching the eye of the cocktail waitress. No need
staying sober. If you get drunk, you can sleep all day the next day,
no need to practice the piano.
Hope this helps,
E.

How do you explain the difference to others?
