say $350.00 - does she mean we only have to use 35,000 reward credits?
The 50,000 credits would equal a $500.00 plane ticket. I would love to
save the extra reward credits if the flight is cheaper than $500.

Getting reimbursed for airfare using points is not automatic but is based on
your play. I did it a couple of time 2 years ago. Last time I did it my
host mentioned that my play level didn't warrant the reimbursement (even though
I was using points) this trip but based on the last trip should would cover
it.
