Fox rent-a-car in Vegas....

Does anyone have experience with Fox rent-a-car? The reviews are pretty bad, but then next cheapest rental car company - payless - has terrible reviews as well. When I spoke to Fox's customer service about the complaints of cars that are dented and dirty, she said that you get to choose any of the cars on the lot, in the class that you're renting. The other complaint about Fox was that they are not located with the other rental car companies, and I believe it was said that it requires two shuttle buses to get there. Since we will have a family member drop us off, we won't need to worry about that, other than getting back to the airport at the end of our trip.

I rented a car from them from Phoenix Sky Harbor as they were the cheapest I
could find. The service was terrible (i.e. unfriendly) but overall the car
itself and the car selection/return was as-expected and without difficulty.
The wait was about 15-20 minutes if I recall, which is actually very good
because for whatever reason my median time seems to be about an hour.

Hi,

I don't know how cheap Fox is but I use Dollar every time I come to Vegas (4-6 times per year) and have never been disappointed. Make sure you sign up for the Dollar Express program to bypass the lines including all the pressure to get insurance, gas and the like.

I just got back from a trip where I had a Ford Escape for a week for $129 plus tax. Now the taxes are significant but that isn't Dollar's fault.

You take the McCarran Rent-A-Car shuttle to the rental car center. You get off of that shuttle outside and board the Fox Rent-A-Car shuttle which is also outside. Their cars are in a different building a short distance away.

John,
Looks like you got a terrific deal at $129. When I check it out for 1 week for a Ford Escape, Dollar is now quoting $176 plus tax for one week.

I went ahead and reserved a Ford Focus through Fox rent-a-car for 4 days, for $84. When I tried to reserve for 5 days the rate jumped to the one week rate $145. Customer Service told me to just reserve it for 4 days, and then extend it one day and the daily rate will be extended, plus an extra $10 (+ tax) per additional day fee, adding up to about $118. I hope this trick works, as it sure is better than paying the one week rate.

After reserving through Fox, I thought I'd compare rates at Dollar for same car. I noted that Dollar also jumped up to a one-week rate when reserving for 5 days. I asked if there was any way I could get a cheaper rate, and was told no. Then I mentioned that Fox offered to extend a 4 day rental to a 5 day using the daily rate plus $10, and the Dollar rep told me that they do that as well. But, apparently you have to know to ask for it. Hope this helps anyone else looking for a 5 day rental.

I just did a comparison of taxes on Fox vs Dollar, and found that Dollar charges a $15 "facility" charge that Fox didn't charge. When I inquired, they said it was for the shuttle, and other facility usage. I then started comparing other taxes and fees that Dollar was charging and found that they were significantly more than Fox. When I inquired, the rep agreed the rate should be lower, but because it was "computer generated" he couldn't do anything about it, and said that I would need to address it at the front desk, and if they couldn't explain it, then they would adjust it.

So.... I guess you can't do a comparison on the daily rate alone, and just assume all the taxes and fees will be the same. Life can't be that simple, can it?

BTW for anyone else who wants to compare apples to apples, I spoke with Dollar's customer rep, and learned that Dollar uses the term "rental tax" for Fox's combined "Nev tax 2%", and "Nev Gov Svc 10%", and Dollar uses "state tax" for Fox's "NV tax las 8.1%", and Dollar's "airport access fee" is Fox's "LAS Conces 10%". To add confusion, the 10% LAS conces fee is against subtotal of the daily base rate plus the vehicle license fee. All the other taxes are against just the subtotal of the daily base rate.

Now, I just need to talk to Dollar's rental desk to learn why they're charging me just under 18% rental tax, instead of the 12% charged by Fox; and just over 12% for the state tax, instead of 8.1% charged by Fox. I doubt that I will go to the trouble, since Fox doesn't charge for their shuttle service, and doesn't have these unanswered questions. Fox's taxes are clearly labelled with the rate being charged.

I just tried Payless, and found that they also charge the $15 fee that Dollar charged, only they called it "customer facility charge", and broke it out as $3.75 per day. They also assessed the fees & taxes a bit differently, only charging $1.33 daily vehicle licence fee instead of $1.35, and assessing the 10% "airport access imposed fee" against just the subtotal of the daily rate whereas both Dollar and Fox calculated this 10% fee against the vehicle license fee as well. You'd think these taxes would be assessed in a consistent manner across car companies, wouldn't you?

So, except for the $15 "customer facility charge", Payless would be the better choice for the 4-day rental. The funny thing about Payless is when I changed my rental request to be 5 days, my daily rate subtotal jumped from $57.80 to an outrageous $549.95.

I'm not going to bother to call them about this weird rate, as I'm going to stick with Fox anyway.

I've noticed that many rental car companies call the various taxes different things but they all seem to add up to about 40 - 45% more than the base rate. The $3.75 a day facilities charge is to pay for the McCarren Rent a Car center. Any vehicle that is rented out of that facility adds in that charge.

As for Payless, be prepared for a fairly aggressive up sell pitch. One of their ploys is if you rent a compact and they are out, they will try to sell you a larger vehicle. If you turn it down, they give you the larger vehicle because they are out of what you reserved. They do the usual scare tactics with insurance and for gas, they will quote you the price of the gas station near them, which is $0.30 a gallon more than you will find near the strip.

Bottom line on Payless is that the cars are cheap but you have to put up with a lot sales nonsense. If you do rent with them, sign up for their affinity program. It will get you 2-3% off your total.

Hi T&J,
Yes, we've rented from Fox several times in the last 3 years, and only because they were the cheapest we could find. True, you have to take a 2nd shuttle to get there but for those who have patience, it's nothing. Never had a long line at the counter to contend with and I've been in major car rental lines for 45 minutes. Always reserved the lowest category car and always got an upgrade to a PT Cruiser mostly; last time a brand new one with 1200 miles on it. And staying at South Point makes returning the car a snap, about 2 mile drive on city streets and you are there so no highway traffic jams to worry about. It's not a luxury operation but you do get your rental car cheap. And be sure to check rates several times a week or daily since they all play games with the rates. Wednesdays seem to have the lowest but that could be "my coincidence." As soon as you know you are going, start checking rates.
