My question is how often can you expect to see a 4 to a Royal in any given
session at my rate of play?
I don't know that answer but I did a spreadsheet simulation of the frequency
of hitting a Royal if 1/47 chances. Being a non math expert and not too
advanced with spreadsheet formulas I typed an x on column a, row 47 then copied
the first 47 rows down then copied the two rows and so on I stopped at I think
10,000 rows. Then I put a random number in column b row 1 and copied it down
to the 10,000th row. Then I sorted both columns using column b as the sort
field. The longest gap between x's was about 260. So you could go that many 4
to a Royals and not hit. Since doing that I just play and don't worry about
how often I hit a Royal. They happen.
Something I imagined once was for Bob Dancer to have at his video poker
class a long continuous row of paper stretched around the classroom walls with
several lines containing x's and red marks every so often and they would
represent the randomness of video poker hits, from Full Houses up to Royals.
Several hundred thousand games could be represented on a hundred feet of paper or
so and the students could visually see the long term. Not sure If I ever
suggested this to Bob.
