Is there a simple explanation regarding when to hold only the Ace when
you are dealt an A+High Card combination? I have a VP trainer and I
seem to never get this right - sometimes you hold both cards and some
times you hold only the Ace (according to the trainer). What am I
missing?
Assuming you have exactly one face card, with a different suit than your ace:
0) If you have two cards the same suit as the ace, or the same suit as your
face card, hold the 3-card flush.
(Technically this isn't what you asked about, but it's easy to get
caught up in the do-I-hold-ace-face and miss the three-flush, a much
bigger error than missing an ace-face hold.)
1) If you have a ten of a different suit than the ace, hold just the ace
2) If you have no cards of the same suit as the ace, hold just the ace
3) If you have no cards that are 2, 3, 4, or 5, hold just the ace
4) Otherwise, hold the ace and face.
