Florida Video Poker

We have the same problem in California Indian casinos where they don't
comp drinks. When I ask them why, they say the state doesn't allow it.
If that's true, then why can't they charge say $1 for a drink to
players that are playing?

Indiana law also forbids comping alcohol - interestingly, including any consumed with a comp'ed meal. They do occ. run a "special" on one or another kind of beer at low cost.

Indiana's casinos are riverboats (at least in theory, no longer required to cruise and none do so that I know of) and NOT Indiana casinos; it's just Indiana law for them.

Of course, the philosophy behind all of this is fascinating - I suppose they think that people will gamble too much or carelessly if they get free drinks. I guess our legislators also think that if you're on a riverboat, you're engaged in entertainment, more than gambling, where if it's a land-based casino, then it's gambling, not entertainment. Of course, now that cruising is not required, I guess they've come to grips with that part of it, but still no land-based casinos yet. I always used to argue that on a land-based casino, when you lose your limit, you can leave, but on a cruising riverboat, if you lose your limit, you need to wait until they return to dock to get off, and are actually more likely to gamble "past your budget" (if you have one). Not to mention if you just lose all your money and want to go away.

Just one of many fascinating odd occurrences forced on casinos by law, in addition to all those idiosycratic practices they come up with on their own.

I used to think that it would take an absolute idiot to lose money running a casino, and I still believe it - and therefore have to conclude that there are some absolute idiots out there doing the job.
