I remember my first royal, a five nickel one on, I think Jacks 6/5, on the
second floor of the old Sundance (now Fitzgerald's) in about 83'. I didn't
learn there was skill involved in video poker until 1999, but anyway, the first
thing that happened when I hit the royal was a disheveled couple came up to me
and complained they were playing my machine for hours and hours and didn't
hit the royal. I realize now they were scam artists trying to get a tip from
me.
In that same year time frame I remember when going to the second floor
buffet at the Sundance, a dealer on a break or before his shift started would be
playing a lone Jacks 9/6 for quarters. He played like there was no tomorrow. I
knew from the little booklet you could buy in the gift shop that 9/6 was
99.54%, just under 100% but why play that? I wonder if that guy later went on to
playing advantage FPDW when they first came out in the early 90's. I had no
idea about the return of Jacks 6/5 or my skill level making the return 3%
lower than optimum or my occasional less that 5 coins sucking another 1.5%
overall. Let me digress. I wonder when Vegas discovered people would go for less
than max coins in order to give the casino more profit. Does anybody know what
year the slots machines had the one to three coin option installed? I
remember back then and all the way up to 1999 I would prefer a Jack to Jack/King
unsuited because I thought my chances were better of getting a royal, lol. I
was so stupid back then but now.... I'M A FLEA AND PROUD OF IT.
