I recall breezing through this discussion below earlier this month and
not giving it much thought at the time, but a recent event this week
makes me extremely grateful that someone followed Barry's advice below!
I was playing a triple play $1 machine this week. This particular
machine will not allow the balance to go over $1200 so if you have a
good run and start to creep up on that limit and hit a good hand it will
pay the hand by spitting out a ticket rather than allowing the credit
meter to go past 1200. I had a balance of a little over 1000 credits
when I got a dealt Wild Royal for $375. I was playing next to a friend
of mine and we were talking about getting dinner at some point, so this
seemed like a nice hand to stop on. My usual routine when leaving a
machine is to remove my player's card and grab the ticket. Well in this
case the ticket I was removing was the $375 I had just won. I had
totally neglected to recall the credits already loaded in the machine.
We went and had dinner and came back to the same machines as there are
only 2 in the place worth playing. I never even suspected something was
amiss until I sat down and a lady at the machine on the other side of
mine asked if I had been there earlier. I wasn't sure where this was
going, but I said yes I had and wondered why she cared. Well she
mentioned finding over $1000 on it and my heart sank. I looked in my
wallet and found 2 tickets. The $375 one from my dealt Wild Royal and
another $1000+ ticket from a set of deuces I had earlier. The I recall
that I had 2 sets of deuces so far and had fed the second $1000 ticket
into the machine shortly before I left for dinner and that ticket was no
where to be found.
The lady who found the credits had reported it apparently after playing
a few hands, so I immediately got in touch with security. He asked to
see my card, but I had been playing with my wife's card. I produced her
card and my ID and he said, yep that's the one. He then cautioned me
that not using my own card may present some problems in getting paid,
but after waiting a few minutes some suit came down with the cash and
paid me my $1000+ without asking twice after seeing my ID. I thanked
the lady profusely who turned it in and gave her some cash for her
efforts. In my case I wasn't even aware I had lost any money and may
not have ever realized it if not for her honesty.
Someone must have been looking out for me that trip as not only did the
money get returned but I also had a 2 Royal session.

I'm not a lawyer, but I've been told by one that this IS stealing, and
you should advise security of the situation. Apparently this is the
same even if you found cash.
Whether this is correct or not, of course, may even depend on state
law, but I believe there was a discussion on this forum in the past that
supports my understanding.
And of course, whether you choose to go ahead and take the money or
not, regardless of the legal implications, is an individual choice with
the attendant risk and rewards.
