Finally Finished "More Frugal Gambling"

Finished Jean's "More Frugal Gambling" and can now read something
else. (started "Cold Mountain")

Overall, this is a book that should be more important to you Vegas
gamblers than the rest of us. Although the rest of the gamblers
around the country will find tons of helpful information, it still
doesn't pertain to the pitiful comp programs in most other areas.
We just don't have the competition that would force the casinos to
give something back to the frequent gamblers.

Still I strongly recommend this book for anyone who dares to step
foot in a casino and is expecting to reap any rewards. My advice
is "Don't leave home without it."

Some of the best quotes from this book are:(I've added them to my
collection and others)

"Some of the opponents you will encounter in poker games will be
more ruthless than any casino in taking your money."

"Every time I go to our condo mailbox, I think, "A day without
casino mail is like a day without sunshine."

"All multi-line machines should have a sign on them: Danger-
Handle With Care!"

"The urge to gamble is one of the great conditioning factors of
life itself. It's as central to the human conditioning as the urge to
eat, drink, and procreate."

"Multi-line video poker, for many players, is the most fun you can
have with your clothes on."

                    --Jean Scott

I asked old VP Pappy what he thought of the book and he said:

"After reading this book, I now feel that I can make all my
mistakes with knowledge and assurance rather than with my usual
ignorance."

          Terry Murphy & VP Pappy

"When asking for comps, speak softly, but carry a big argument."
                  --VP Pappy

PS: Jean, a suggestion for a new book: Keep a diary and do a "One
Year in the Life of the Frugal Gambler." Lots of casino experiences
and more personal stuff. Less factual information.

Thanx for the kind review, VP Pappy.

<<PS: Jean, a suggestion for a new book: Keep a diary and do a "One
Year in the Life of the Frugal Gambler." Lots of casino experiences

I've thought about that, including a chapter called "The best casinos for FITR." Maybe that will be our next research project in casinos - but at our ages, it may take more years than we have left!!!!!!!!

(Going on Medicare this month has me preoccupied with the subject of fleeting time - but I'm sure I'll get over it. One can get used to anything once it is no longer a novelty!)

And would everyone notice how I post. If I quote someone, I put << >>. When it is my own words, I don't put << >>. Some of you drive me crazy - I can't readily tell who is writing what and what is being quoted and what is your response to a quote. Look back at your last posts - and if the shoe fits, please put it on. I read every post on both lists - and my grandkids are here - there just aren't enough hours in the day!!!!!

But I still love you all!!!!!

You're probably on target here, although I think the AC player will
find the comp/slot club section extremely valuable as well.

But these discussions represent less than half of the overall content
and I'm hard pressed to imagine a player who won't come away with
their money's worth from MFG.

I value it much more greatly than I did the first Frugal.

Harry, can you name 3 things you learned from the new Frugal book. I have
and read the first one and felt it was much too elementary.

So, you expect a windbag such as myself to stop at 3, huh?

Ok, I'll be honest and state up front that the more seasoned player is
going to only come away with a few stray tidbits here and there.

But what impresses me most with this book is that when I consider what
I'd find most important to relate to a less seasoned player (and I'm
including players advanced well beyond the novice stage here) this
book is extraordinarily comprehensive in covering that material.

Frankly, I'd love to pop a copy of this book into the hands of every
vpFREE member. I think it would put people on a stronger footing so
that discussions were more substantive -- the basics, facts as well as
misconceptions, having largely been handled. (And that's not a
statement I'd be inclined to make about Jean's first book, Frugal
Gambler - just a personal perspective since that book is widely
acclaimed.)

···

------

One interesting "tidbit" that I came away with for myself is one that
shoulld have been common sense, but simply hadn't occurred to me -
that Insurance is a favorable BJ bet in conjunction with most coupons.

There were also aspects of various discussions that I found
enlightening, even if not totally revelatory, including those on
player ethics.

Another was the suggestion that questions/requests directed to hosts
should be broadly phrased and not expressed in terms that beg a
"yes/no" reply, so as to avoid putting the host in the uncomfortable
position of using the "No" word, not to mention opening the door to
other insights that might not otherwise be volunteered.

------

Bottom line is that I wouldn't have pushed the book onto a player such
as yourself, who's pretty casino savvy in general. But I'd certainly
have suggested that it's worth your perusal, even if to borrow a copy
from someone for a spare hour. But, hell, the book is pretty damn
cheap and I don't mind having it in my library to lend to others.
(I'll cough up the truth and admit that my copy was a gift, but I'd
gladly have parted with my own bucks for it.)

But for 95% of the players in the casino, and a very large proportion
of vpFREE members, there's a wealth of material to be mined here and
it's contained in a book that's exceptionally well written and organized.

I met Jean Scott my last trip at a LVA member's
group member meeting. I mumbled something about why I
had not bought either of her books, she seemed not the
least offended, told me she sensed I was a pretty
knowledgable player and her books were directed more
to the "masses", By the way, I love vppappy's stuff,
may I publicly praise him?
