Extended stay in Vegas

Some work-related stuff is going to force me to spend about 6-8 weeks
in Vegas this summer. [Ow! Ow! Stop twisting my arm  ] I'm really
not going to have enough free time to give any casino enough play for
a free room, and this feels like too long a time to stay in a
casino-hotel anyway; so I'm looking for some recommendations for a
good extended-stay hotel. I'm going to be out there alone, so I'm
definitely NOT looking for a "family friendly" type place, but rather
a "businessman/executive" type environment. Other amenities I'm
looking for would be 24 hour pool and gym (I keep strange hours),
broadband access, and an on-site laundry room. Workplace is a
location on Tropicana Ave, about 1 1/2 miles east of UNLV, so places
closer to there are obviously preferable.

I'm also trying to figure out if there's anyway to avoid paying an
insane amount of money for a rental car, if anyone has any ideas about
that either. Any ideas for locations or a tip as to a website that
might have some info on this would be appreciated. Thanx!

I've heard good things about Emerald Suites. They're a small (but
growing) extended-stay chain in Vegas. They advertise fitness
centers, broadband Internet access, and full kitchens with
dishwashers. They have locations on Tropicana close to the Strip,
another on Trop across from the Orleans (the newest location), and
one four miles south of Mandalay Bay on the Strip. The downside is
that they've become somewhat pricey since they first opened a few
years ago. Moreover, their online reservations system won't allow
reservations of more than 30 days. I think they may be trying to
discourage longer-term stays. Their website is www.emeraldsuites.com.

You'll want to avoid the Budget Suites chain. First of all, they have
no high-speed Internet access at all. Their monthly rates are very
attractive 聴 but that also attracts a lot of folks at the lower end
of the food chain, those moving to Vegas with little to their name,
seeking a cheaper place to live (often fleeing the high cost of
living in California). The New York Times did an interesting (though
not entirely accurate) story last week about the families who often
populate the local Budget Suites locations, and how they are often
mooching off of other residents. Having said that, I stayed at the
one for a few days at Boulder and Tropicana three years ago, and was
pleasantly surprised. What did surprise me was the number of pets I
saw in front windows, or just outside first-floor rooms. Their
website is www.budgetsuites.com.

Corporate apartments are plentiful, especially in the southern part
of the metro area and in Henderson. Oakwood is a name that comes to
mind.

We are closing on our house 6/16 & are moving to Las Vegas. Until we find a
home we are staying at the Budget Suites at 4205 W. Tropicana. I checked
out the Emerald Suites, but they have no availability. My realtor told us
that location should be O.K., but I have heard some of the stories. Does
anyone know or can tell me what that location is like as far as problems go?

We arrive in Las Vegas on June 24th and are first taking advantage of 15
days of free room offers. If anyone will be around and wants to meet we are
staying at The Rio (but will be playing at The Palms) 6/24-6/27, Sam's Town
6/28-6/30, LVH 7/1-7/5, & MSS 7/6-7/8.

For your purposes, Budget Suites isn't a bad idea, especially for a
relatively short term. Just be advised that if you're planning on
eating in the room much, they do not have microwaves (or didn't when
I stayed there). They only have regular ovens and stovetops. Of
course, you can get a cheap microwave for about $35 at Wal-Mart these
days.

Also remember that they do not provide bedclothes or kitchenware. You
must provide your own, so make whatever arrangements you need.

Above all, have fun!

I remember Steve (Artcontrol) posting a note on vp-mail a few years
ago about a quality place they stayed at. He said it was a lot
better than Budget Suites if I remember. Perhaps he can post that
location.
