I'm Jewish but when I was a young child I wanted a stocking with presents
like my Christian friends were getting. I begged and begged and my mother
kept saying if I hung one it would be empty. I insisted on hanging it and
yes, in the morning it was empty to my great disappointment. Many years
later she told me that her mother (an immigrant, running from pogroms in the
"shtetls" - small towns in Poland) thought Christmas was an American holiday
and that she and her sister had stockings with presents on Christmas. Never
changed the bitter feeling I had as a six-year-old (or so) that one time I
insisted on hanging the stocking.
