Entering Canada

One additional comment to what has been posted. If Canada is looking for a
birth certificate with a raised seal, it must be issues by the city or other
government agency. A raised seal from the hospital is not sufficient.
A few years ago when going to Aruba (a birth certificate with a raised seal
or passport is required) my passport was expired so I brought my birth
certificate. Since it was issued by the hospital, it was unacceptable and I wasn't
allowed to board the plane.
My wife and daughter enjoyed a great weekend in Aruba, until I was able to
get an emergency same day passport and join them on Monday.
The best bet is to get a passport.

You assume right Jean...since 9/11 you need to show your license and answer
a few questions. Occasionally they'll search your car and ask for the birth
certificate.

My wife and I went to Cancun a few months after 9/11
(frugal me got a super bargain) and I had my hospital
birth certificate (I have since renewed my passport)
which they did not accept, ripped me off for some $10
or so fee and had me fill out some form and get it
notarized but they let me on the plane.

On the subject of getting back into the USA............

My wife and I took a trip to Italy this fall, and we booked RT out of
LAX to Italy. I also booked a 1 way SW flight from LV to LAX on the
Internet. I did not book a return flight from LAX to LV because our
return date/time was uncertain, and schedule changes wern't allowed
for the cheap internet flights. So, in Italy, a week before
departing, I booked, using the internet, a 1 way flight on Southwest
from LAX back to LV.

The flight from Milan to London to LAX went smoothly, with minimal
checking leaving Italy and London. But when we got to LAX's
Southwest departure gate we were both thoroughly searched, even
a "pat down". The reason, I think, is we made the SW reservation in
Italy, not the US, on fairly short notice. This must be an unusual
way to make a SW reservation so their system "flagged" us for a
search. When we walked up to the security check area it was like
they were waiting for us! The search took so long we barely made our
flight.
