End of the Year on the River

So who has a story or an observation about this past year in Laughlin?

Or maybe a wish for 2005?

Biggest surprise for me- Harrah's hooked me. They are in my top
three now.

A Wish- Hope Barrick leaves my favorite river joint, GNL, in a
playable condition.

I discovered Laughlin this year after a driving weekend to LV. I'm
finding LV is getting too noisy, too crowded, and it's taking too
much effort to find good plays. My primary casinos there are really
upping the play requirements and the comps are shrinking. Laughlin is
a real discovery.

I didn't check the database, just took a room at Flamingo where my
two-deck BJ play was enough to comp the whole stay. Hit EW and CB
for VP. Liked the specialty restaurants at Flamingo and Riverside.
Now I get more offers than I can even imagine. I haven't even made
it up the hill to RP or Harrah's yet. After 10 LV trips in 2004
(which is way too many, I discovered too late), I think I'll focus on
Laughlin in the next year.

My wish for 2005 is and always remains that $1 FPDW will return in
the form of Game Maker slant-tops with a view of the river. Now, how
likely is that?

Just some random thoughts and opinions:

Man-- It is just too hot in the summer.

It is difficult to get to Laughlin for me. 487 miles each way if I
drive. I lose almost a full day coming and going. I need to get an
economy car. At 17 miles to the gallon and $2/gallon....well you do
the math.

It is just too smokey at the Riverside. With poor VP they are just
not getting much of my business.

Edgewater must spend a fortune in mail expense. I get something
almost every week. Best place for VP in town I think.

Best cheerleading casino for Laughlin: Riverside. They bring in plane
loads of people from everywhere, and I am sure at a loss.

Best entertainment: Riverside. Their entertainers are only slightly
over the hill. Too bad I hate country music.

Harrahs: They need a moving sidewalk or something to get me there.
Every time I walk in the place, I think about the shoot out a couple
of years ago (I was there 2 days after the "event"). I do like the
smoke free casino.

Colorado Belle: Their promotion department must be taking lots of
naps. The event center seems to now be used only by the Edgewater.

River Palms: I used to hate this place, but I am getting more
comfortable there now. They make me nervous with the cutting and
changing of promotions. I think we will hear more bad news in 2005.

Golden Nugget: in transition again. They need to clean that bird poop
off those green awnings. It is really looking bad.

Regency: Their prime rib special is really good and hard to beat.
Forget about playing there though.

Flamingo: This place has been on the market for almost 2 years now,
and the place seems to be going downhill. It needs some work and
attention, but no one wants to spend any money on upgrades. This used
to be my favorite.

Ramada Express: It is a nice place, but I never spend much time there
anymore. I never could figure out how trains and a patriotic theme
went together.

Pioneer: Too smokey again. They sure have the nicest section along
the river walk though.

What happened to all the cats that used to be around the river? I
hope they didn't end in the soup.

Everytime I come to town I see more growth on the Arizona side. I
keep thinking I should buy some property in the area, but then I
visit in the summer and.... forget that idea.

I made 5 trips to Laughlin in 2004. One above my average. Not a
single royal in those trips.

Excellent rooms, good breakfast buffet.

OTOH lousy casino esp. VP paytables, and overpriced coffee shop.

Agreed.

Also hope the new management stops messing around with River Palms to
its detriment, or they'll lose their customers. And stop overworking
your employees.

One good thing at RP--the buffet seems to have improved, at a modest
increase in price.

Suggestion for all Laughlin casinos: add smoke removal equipment to
your properties. Those with non-smoking areas shouldn't put lousy VP
machines in them. More and more of your customers don't smoke.

Our first visit to Laughlin was mid-year, and with their comp
requirements we will probably be back for half of our 8 trips in
2005. LV property play requirements are going up for us making
Laughlin a cheap alternative.

Sure there are limitations on restaurants and entertainment. The
crowd at the EW, where we usually stay, is not what we are used to,
but the treatment we get for less play makes it worthwhile for us.

We're happy to give up TITO machines and other conveniences of LV
for the extras we get in Laughlin. If we were more into the Vegas
Atmosphere it would not work, but we can play good games, get good
comps and take it easy.

Thanks go to you members for the info you have provided. VPFree has
been a great help in getting our foot in the door down there.

Bluestreak,
We had a lot of fun going to Laughlin in 2004 (primarily RP). We
went seven times from Boston. Planned our trips around the RP's
bounceback. When bounceback stopped in July, we stopped going and
cultivated LV opportunities.

Now the bounceback appears to have again started but the offers from
LV Hilton, Caesars, Green Valley, etc. have a better EV. Interesting
how marketing departments can be a barrier to player development.
A smart VP player told me to always stay flexible.
