How's the nightlife in Elko, Mickey?
In a nutshell it sux. All fat girls and cowboys. The major problem I have
experienced in small town Northern Nevada, not just Elko, is explaining my
presence to the locals. A hustler is a duck out of water in these spots.
What do you say to these people when they ask you what you do for a
living? A typical conversation might go like this:
"What do you do for a living?"
"I'm a professional gambler"
"Then what are you doing in Elko?"
"Playing video poker"
"Yeah, right! Are you a narc?"
I used to get so mad at being asked that question that I finally told one
guy "Yes, I am a narc, but tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna let you
go this time."
When I would holeup in Fallon, playing Draw till U Win at Stockmen's, The
hired help just could not figure out what I was doing there and kept asking
me questions like "Where are you from?, what are you doing in Fallon?,
how long do you plan on staying?, what kind of work do you do? How
many royals have you hit in the last week? I guess they figured out the
answers to these questions themselves because they finally took the game
down.
Elko does have one distinction along with Ely. The brothels are in the city
limits. So if you are playing video poker and get the urge you are only two
blocks away. Once, when I hit a routine $1000 royal and was waiting on
the handpay, a lady at the bar saw it and came over and introduced
herself, told me which brothel she worked at and the hours she would be
there. That's all she could tell me as it is against the law for them to solicit
in the casinos.
It was very boring hanging out in those towns. So I watched alot of TV
when I wasn't playing video poker. My motivation for being in those spots
was the $5000 a month it was worth to be there. That might be chump
change to some pros but not to this old day laborer. I would come and go
quite a bit.
There are a couple of lesser, but still good plays in Eastern NV. Not
taking part in those, either. All for you, Mickey.
The easy money is about over with in rural Northern Nevada. Not a whole
lot left. Every once in a while something pops up, but is usually gone
quickly. I'm through with just about all of those little bergs, except for a
pass through every year or so to survey the situation.
There was a 12% quarters play a couple of years ago in Wendover. Had I
heard about it before it's demise, I might have been tempted to go up
for a couple of days. Might have...
I've had my share of 4% and 5% plays, but I don't recall ever having a
12% play. Would you mind telling me just exactly what this 12% play was?
If you can't, that's okay as I have to withhold information myself at times.
