Elko Info.

There's a new joint slot club involving the Commercial and Stockman casinos.
One dollar coin in gets you a point (didn't seem to work on the nickel
machines today) and 6000 points gets you $5 cashback and a $5 food credit. If
you want to hang around the Stockman on Wednesday nights, you can get in on
their "Cooler full of cash" drawings.

Which is an improvement over the Red Lion club which has no cash back at
all. (Although they have started with some mailers with weekly coupons for $10
cash, restaurant credits, and monthly free rooms.)

Now, if any of these joints would see fit to install a full-pay machine or
two, then we'd be gettin' somewhere. (Although I did manage to win $50 on the
8/5 BP machine at K-Mart this week.)

somemore gems in town somewhere.

How I long for the good old days when I had 8 unlinked Flush Attacks
and 10 unlinked House a Rockin' in the Red Lion to sweep through
everyday. Plus 2 more unlinked Flush Attacks in Gold Country across the
street. And, oh yes, the 6 quarter Draw till U Win at Stockmens. All
with no one in town but little ole me to play them.

How's the nightlife in Elko, Mickey?

There was a 12% quarters play a couple of years ago in Wendover. Had I
heard about it before it's demise, I might have been tempted to go up
for a couple of days. Might have...

There are a couple of lesser, but still good plays in Eastern NV. Not
taking part in those, either. All for you, Mickey.

In a nutshell it sux. All fat girls and cowboys. The major problem I have
experienced in small town Northern Nevada, not just Elko, is explaining my
presence to the locals. A hustler is a duck out of water in these spots.
What do you say to these people when they ask you what you do for a
living? A typical conversation might go like this:

"What do you do for a living?"
"I'm a professional gambler"
"Then what are you doing in Elko?"
"Playing video poker"
"Yeah, right! Are you a narc?"

I used to get so mad at being asked that question that I finally told one
guy "Yes, I am a narc, but tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna let you
go this time."

When I would holeup in Fallon, playing Draw till U Win at Stockmen's, The
hired help just could not figure out what I was doing there and kept asking
me questions like "Where are you from?, what are you doing in Fallon?,
how long do you plan on staying?, what kind of work do you do? How
many royals have you hit in the last week? I guess they figured out the
answers to these questions themselves because they finally took the game
down.

Elko does have one distinction along with Ely. The brothels are in the city
limits. So if you are playing video poker and get the urge you are only two
blocks away. Once, when I hit a routine $1000 royal and was waiting on
the handpay, a lady at the bar saw it and came over and introduced
herself, told me which brothel she worked at and the hours she would be
there. That's all she could tell me as it is against the law for them to solicit
in the casinos.

It was very boring hanging out in those towns. So I watched alot of TV
when I wasn't playing video poker. My motivation for being in those spots
was the $5000 a month it was worth to be there. That might be chump
change to some pros but not to this old day laborer. I would come and go
quite a bit.

The easy money is about over with in rural Northern Nevada. Not a whole
lot left. Every once in a while something pops up, but is usually gone
quickly. I'm through with just about all of those little bergs, except for a
pass through every year or so to survey the situation.

I've had my share of 4% and 5% plays, but I don't recall ever having a
12% play. Would you mind telling me just exactly what this 12% play was?
If you can't, that's okay as I have to withhold information myself at times.

It was a rare IGT bartop mistake. Anthony Curtis published it in his
Casino Player column some time back, so I guess the omerta is off on
this one. Essentially it was Bonus Deluxe with a 2 coin 2p, as one pro
recently confided to me, with a straight face, "like it should be". It
lasted for quite a while actually.

Hey Mickey

With all those brothels in or near some of the towns you played in
why not answer the locals with; "I'm here to see a special lady. I
gotta get far from home so no one knows me. You know how that is."
Elbow them in the ribs and laugh. Locals might be able to buy that
better than professional gambler.

I'm not sure of the amount, but I think Wong wrote of a play in the
first vp book I bought; Professional Video Poker. It's been so long
that I'm not even sure of the name of the book. The book covered the
first JOB progressives and even had some cut out strategy cards. I
think the play was in the 30 or 40 percent range. Of course that was
a one time shot. I think it lasted a while till it was hit. As I
recall the meter was stacked on to the vp from some other game, but
even those details are foggy. I have to look for that book.

Cheers...Jeep

When was the last time you set foot in Elko, anyway?

The nightlife does leave a bit to be desired, but if you're a magnet
for hookers and working-mother cocktail waitresses, there should
never be a dull moment. (Certainly more exciting than hanging
around the Wisconsin casinos.)

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been online for awhile. June was the
last time I was in Elko. But I don't stay for more than a day lately as I
can't find anything to play.
