->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hi Irv,
I promise that this is my last word on puns. I am saying this in
advance of Tom banishing the thread to FREEvpFREE, where it deserves
to be.
I ran your post past my husband, who is a world championship
punster, and he verifies that you are 100% correct. The "vacuum"
sentence is a clever "play on words", but not a pun.
As an additional El Cortez "play on words", he submits the following:
He's surprized that, while discussing how "nothing exists in a
vacuum" we were all swept up in the dialogue.
Furthermore, he adds that while playing (in a vacuum) at a FPVP
grind joint, rather than a glitzy strip property, you are less
likely to be taken to the cleaners.
I know, I know!! Nobody in our family can stand it either.
As an example of a genuine pun, particularly appropriate to the
season, I offer the following:
A man goes to the dentist for a new upper plate, since his has
corroded. The dentist asks about the man's recent diet. The man
responds that his diet is unchanged except that he's eating lots
more Hollandaise sauce, and now puts it on meat, fish, veggies,
toast etc. The dentist says that is the problem, because the lemon
juice in the sauce is corrosive, and that this time he will make the
plate out of chrome. "Why chrome?", queries the patient. To which
the dentist replies, "There's no plate like chrome for Hollandaise!"
I can't believe I said that!!
Now, after all that I must confess, I don't understand your "Focus"
pun either. I must be brain-dead. Please send me a PRIVATE email
explaining, so that I can share it with my husband.
Happy New Year and good vp luck in 2005 !
Babe
Babe,
There's nothing to be ashamed about, because it wasn't a pun!
A
pun involves at least one word that *sounds* like another word or
words. For example: A person entered a pun contest. He entered
ten
seperate puns, hoping to win first prize, but no pun in ten did.
Or,
my favorite triple pun (on three consecutive words): A woman had
three sons who owned a cattle ranch. They asked her what to name
the
ranch, and she suggested the name Focus because, as she put it, it
was where the sons raise meat.
