Bob doesn't chase Royals unless he gets a bonus for a Royal. Chasing is a sucker play and Bob is an excellent player. BTW I once went 10 cycles between Royals. That hurt!

I think pretty much all video poker players are "royal chasers", perhaps some don't know it. The only way you're not a royal chaser is if you have enough overlay to get a freeroll at the royal (around over 2% overlay with maxEV strategy) or you play odd progressives or games like Pick'Em (in which case you're a quad chaser) or flush attack (in which case you're a flush chaser) or Triple Double Bonus (in which case you're an aces with kicker chaser) or you use something like MaxNonRoyal strategy (you discount the value of the royal as a long shot). There's probably some other odd exceptions I can't think of offhand, gambling is full of exceptions to the rule.

If you're playing a breakeven game, in general, if you hit a royal in a cycle, you breakeven. If you hit a royal in less than a cycle, you're probably a net winner, and if it takes you more than a cycle to hit a royal, you're probably a net loser. So, whether you know it or not, you're a "royal chaser". The royal is generally some 2% or so of the return, so if you care about that, you're a "royal chaser".

In my opinion, I think that we are in a semantics situation with the term "royal chasing". If one is playing "maxEV strategy", you are simply playing the strategy, not "chasing the royal". It is always GREAT to get a RF, and we all like to get them, but, that should not be construed that one is "chasing the royal".

Bob, I was referring an actual "9-5" job..rather than teaching classes, etc...weren't you in some sort of technical field in So-Cal before moving to Vegas?

Actually, I played a lot of 9-5 JoB at various casinos when the conditions were right

When I first glanced at the above text, I thought the writer was referring to 9-5 Jacks or better!

OK, so you admit that it's "always GREAT to get a RF", but you're very stoic in your approach. If you had a one card draw to a royal, you would be coldly calculating the EV in your head, like Clint Eastwood, your pulse still a steady 30 beats per minute, not salivating over the chance of actually hitting the royal? Like a Shoalin monk, you would be totally indifferent to the actual results of your draw, if you actually hit a royal, you wouldn't even allow yourself to sigh, you'd simply acknowledge: "I knew it had to happen eventually, just one of 47 possible outcomes"? I'm curious about what it is that you object to about the phrase "chasing the royal"? Does it sound too degenerate? Too hedonistic?

Sigh!

RF's are a (really nice) part of the VP experience. What you feel at any given time (like drawing one to the RF) has no effect of when you get one or when you don't. My better half and I enjoy the challenge of playing the best that we can, and let the RNG do its merry thing. <smile>

And, to answer your question, I guess i find the term "chasing the royal" not applicable in our case. We are all individuals and we all have our own individual feelings and I expressed mu own personal feeling.
