So I tried the great pay-table of downtown deuces for .25 and lost $500 rather quickly no ducks, and only 3 wild royals.. is this game the devils spawn? or is this pretty much normal?

In an one-hour session playing a single-line deuces wild game, I lost 200 units in one hour without hitting the royal, quad ducks, quints, or wild royal flush. Your 400-unit lost is on par given you didn't hit the royal, quad ducks, or quints.

That's an exceptionally ugly game-if you don't hit a natural royal or 4 deuces you will have wished you had played 8-5 JOB.
Like most phantom "positive plays" you can get wrecked. Be thankful you stuck to quarters. I once blew a grand in a couple of hours at the dollar FPDW at the Frontier-didn't even have time to get a buzz from the drinks!
People would do good to remember this when some moron says there is a "great positive play" out there. Other than malfunctioning machines, gone before you know it promotions and other short-lived casino errors there are no more "great positive plays" out there higher than quarters-and don't believe the addicts (ooops sorry-pro's!) who tell you there are.

Thank you for the reply. I should have done more homework before playing. I didn't realize how high the variance was! Yikes! I was just looking at the total return. I am thinking now I should just go back to fpdw? Or do I risk another $500 and give it a go?

Downtown Deuces is a great game if (1) you play accurate strategy, (2) can handle the 55 plus variance, (3) have the bankroll [about $4k] to handle the losing sessions, and (4) can handle the Vegas Club - on the dumpy side. Risks are great but so are the potential rewards. Very very very few opportunities remaining for VP games paying over 100% - not considering comps, etc.
FPDW is less than half the variance and only .16% less potential payback, but the rush on hitting the deuces for $500 is priceless.
8-5 JOB is far less than 100% (about 99%) and a guaranteed lonf-term loser, not considering comps, etc. I play VP for the long term.

FPDW if you can find it. NSUD if you can't. But stay away from Loose Deuces-another vacum cleaner.

Funny how video poker works. I'm lifetime ahead on loose deuce, triple pay deuces ,and downtown deuces. I'm not even close to being even on the "much safer" 9/6 Jacks ( 99.7 when I consider all the progs I've played ).
I use to hate the game like a lot of you. A disastrous Xmas trip , over 12 years ago, left me in the hole for $3000. Desperate , I was at the old Las Vegas club and dumped my last $100 from my razor thin wallet into a $1 triple play deuce machine. Down to $40 , I hit the 4 ducks and bingo...back to even for the trip!
Then there was that time at Vacation village, playing the $ 15/10 loose deuce. Hit the Royal, but not the ducks.
Or at the Palace station, where I hit the 25C triple ducks 3X in one day, and then the 50C loose deuce.
Or at the El Cortez, where I use to play the $ Downtown Deuces. Hit those many times , but never the Royal !
Is this a game for the faint of heart or penny pinching retiree ? no - would not recommend !
best wishes...Tom

Mike,
I have noticed that you like to use the "addicts (ooops sorry-pro's!)" in a lot of your posts. This time, you also say "remember this when some moron says there is a "great positive play" out there."
The fact is, there is no shortage of "great positive play" here in Las Vegas and they don't require "a million dollar" bankroll to play. Either your comments are fueled by your jealousy of others successes, or you don't possess the knowledge and discipline that is required to find and take advantage of the available opportunities.
If or when the point arrives where ALL good play is gone and the potential for profit is no longer worth the effort required, I will walk away from Video Poker and never look back. Does that sound like an "addict" or "moron" to you?

I'm not going to take the bait. I think those here who have blown tens of thousands chasing some phantom "positive play" know full well what I am saying.
I know someone who blew a hundred grand-everything he had-on dollar FPDW and yes he played pretty damn close to perfect and wouldn't even enjoy a cocktail. He was not a pro or an AP or anything else-he was an addict.
Some may label this "fun". No thanks-I'll stick to quarters, nice meals and all the free booooooze I can handle. The best entertainment in the world. No stress. That's fun.

Somebody better at math will probably come along with the exact answer, but losing $100k playing dollar FPDW with correct strategy is roughly a 1 in 500,000 event. Worthy of skepticism, but clearly not impossible.
But what does it mean?
Given all this, and stipulating that I believe it happened, how much should I consider a 1 in 500,000 event in my daily life?
Here's an interesting article about our perceptions of risk:

Does not matter his response since it is mathematically impossible to lose 100,000 dollars playing $1 FPDW even without a slot club while playing even close to correct strategy. If this story is even partially true, which I highly doubt, then the person that claims to have lost this money probably has some other money leaks which he blames on video poker.

Ok, Using Dunbar's Risk Analyzer for Video Poker the Risk of Ruin for FPDW at the dollar level with $100,000 bankroll is 0.000234%. That's one in 427,350 (unless I slipped a digit somewhere).

Can't remember. It certainly wasn't my money so I wasn't keeping track. It was "almost $100,000" he said so it might have been 80K or 90K.
Again since it wasn't my money I wasn't keeping track. This was at the Frontier. I took a $1000 loss there in one day myself and never played them again.
Come to think of it those 2 machines were usually empty even though they were in the old database and were NO secret.

I don't know about your math and I won't even point out the obvious facts (other than to addicts) that NO ONE plays computer perfect strategy and NO ONE plays error free.
However, the odds you give are beaten every single day at lotteries, Powerball, progressives, etc.
The odds of a dealt royal are much higher than the figure you give.

Ok, Using Dunbar's Risk Analyzer for Video Poker the Risk of Ruin for FPDW at the dollar level with $100,000 bankroll is 0.000234%. That's one in 427,350 (unless I slipped a digit somewhere).

I'll keep drinking but I'm posting 2500 miles from Arizona and I would cut my throat before I played a progression system.

Thanks Tom!
I am thinking I might try another $500 in one session and see where I come out at. Even if I lost it would not be the end of world. Then I will just go back to fpdw.. I think

Funny how video poker works. I'm lifetime ahead on loose deuce, triple pay
deuces ,and downtown deuces. I'm not even close to being even on the "much
safer" 9/6 Jacks ( 99.7 when I consider all the progs I've played ).
I use to hate the game like a lot of you. A disastrous Xmas trip , over 12
years ago, left me in the hole for $3000. Desperate , I was at the old Las
Vegas club and dumped my last $100 from my razor thin wallet into a $1
triple play deuce machine. Down to $40 , I hit the 4 ducks and bingo...back
to even for the trip!
Then there was that time at Vacation village, playing the $ 15/10 loose
deuce. Hit the Royal, but not the ducks.
Or at the Palace station, where I hit the 25C triple ducks 3X in one day,
and then the 50C loose deuce.
Or at the El Cortez, where I use to play the $ Downtown Deuces. Hit those
many times , but never the Royal !
Is this a game for the faint of heart or penny pinching retiree ? no - would
not recommend !
best wishes...Tom

Where to start in responding to that? Or is the question whether to start at all?
I give up Mike, I don't think we can get there from here. Happy travels and good luck in the casinos.

I don't know about your math and I won't even point out the obvious facts (other than to addicts) that NO ONE plays computer perfect strategy and NO ONE plays error free.
However, the odds you give are beaten every single day at lotteries, Powerball, progressives, etc.
