Double down strategy
double down is an even money proposition (100% average return)
good gamblers know never to take an even money bet unless their
bankroll is bigger than their opponent (in the case of video poker
your opponent is the casino and their bankroll is very big)
when you're the smaller bankroll playing against a larger bankroll,
you need an edge to get a chance of winning, my recommendation for
video poker is at least a percent, then if you have sufficient
bankroll and can play near perfect and play N0 hands
[N0=variance/(er-1+comp)^2] your chances of winning are 84%

1. Don't double down if you're playing a game with
a positive ER.
2. Doubling down on a negative ER game is OK,
except that it may slow you down (which may be
good) and it may have adverse effects on earning
points.

There can't be a double down "strategy" any more than there can be
a "strategy" for flipping a coin, since the bet is even money and
there is no way you can alter, improve, or worsen your odds of
winning.
Whatever VP game you play in conjunction with the double down, the
strategy for that game would not be altered in any way by your
playing the double down option after the hand was over.

That's a common viewpoint, but it isn't necessarily correct. It depends
on the player's objective. It is true that double-down does not alter EV,
but it does impact risk.
If the game is negative EV and the player's goal is to multiply a starting
bankroll by some predetermined factor (2, 3 or whatever) then using the
double-down option will increase the probability of reaching that goal
instead of going broke.
For positive EV games, the effect is just the opposite -- using the
double down will decrease the probability of success and increase
the probability of going broke before reaching a fixed target.

If results were to be examined after-tax, I've observed one woman who
altered her "odds of winning" through doubling.
Playing $2 vp, she doubled and redoubled every 80 cr. win until bust
or she hit the $5000+ win limit of the machine. I've seen her walk
away from her session with a fist full of W2-G's on occasion. I'm
sure her accountant was dubiously thrilled with her luck given her
undoubted exposure to deduction phase-out.

also, it does not change the % payback on the machine, if 99.54 JOB
before the double up, still 99.54 after , if DW 100.7 before,still
100.7 after, as you have to play the game first to reach the even
money bet,
about a year ago we had this discussion & dan payamar {???} finally
got this thru to me
