Does A Positive Attitude Make You "Lucky" ?

Howdy

Yesterday I finally got a RF after going 0 for 72. Ironically it was the
first time I did it holding one card. Talk about the hard way! I still have not
got one holding 4 cards in my last sixty nine attempts.

As fate would have it last night there was a show on talk radio about
creating your own luck. The guest claimed it was all about "The Law Of Attraction"
and like energy attracts like energy. Being lucky at the slots was mentioned.

I remember way back when I was building a nice bankroll I was in a more
positive frame of mind than when I was losing my buttocks .Of course that stands
to reason.

I know being positive makes for a clearer head and therefore you play
better. Does anyone believe that positive thinking can make you a winner at the
casino?

Well, one thing is for sure....when we are losing.... positive thinking often serves to make us think we can recover the losses. When we are winning, positive thinking serves to make us think we can win more. Both very dangerous postive thinking. We agree with you that the best benefit of maintaining a positive attitude is it enhances correct play. For example...we were playing a $1 DDB progressive with the Royal at $6,385. I moved from one machine to another after hitting four 4's and checking to see if any thing was behind it (flawed thinking). Right after I moved to the machine beside it a guy came up and immediately hit four 2's on the machine I had just moved from. My attitude went south very quickly....I then noticed I starting to hold the wrong cards on my new machine and had to stop for a break to get my attitude right again. (yes, I get emotional sometimes when I play...but I have never once rubbed the machine for good luck, slapped the buttons hard or
placed a lucky rock on the hand rest) As luck and correct play would have it, I hit the Royal approximately 30 mins later after the break to recover my postive thinking.

Good luck and correct play to all, Chuck and Kathy

Absolutely-- if-- you also primarily play positive games considering comps/cashback. One tends to concentrate more, speed increases (i.e. worry less about making a mistake), and your overall enjoyment increases. Finally, read all the studies re "positive thinking/happy vs negative attitude" increases average life span.

Probably not. However, it will likely make the experience more
enjoyable.

One of the problems with "a positive attitude" is after losing for
several hours straight it can turn into a "I'm positive I'll never
hit anything" attitude.

Your state of mind will NOT affect your results, except to the

extent that that state of mind affects your skill level. In a game
such as roulette or craps where nothing you can do will change the
outcome, your results will be the same whether you're in a sunny or
crappy mood. In skill-based games such as VP, poker, blackjack,
sports betting, etc., your attitude may very well influence how well
you play, but it will not affect the raw probabilities: in other
words, when you discard one card to draw to a royal, you have a 1-in-
47 chance of hitting, regardless of whether you "feel" you are
DEFINITELY GOING TO HIT TODAY, are clutching your lucky rabbit's
foot, your horoscope mentioned good fortune, or you are just in a
sunny, optimistic mood. You also have a 1-in-47 chance if you are
currently feeling that life sucks, that you NEVER hit those $%#@$ one-
card draws, and that if you don't hit the royal today you're probably
going to run out and shoot yourself.

The thoughts and feelings that pass through your mind while playing are
like clouds passing through the sky, or like scenery passing as you
look through the window of a moving train. Enjoy them if you like...
but they just come and go, and don't mean anything special. Best to not
take them too seriously.

Remember: not everything you hear on Oprah is gospel truth.

Answer to the question you asked: Yes, some people believe that.

Answer to the question you meant to ask: Yes, at poker. No, otherwise.

I'm firm testament to the fact that it doesn't. (I'm not suggesting
that I suffer adverse luck on the whole, however.)

I will assert that a postive attitude will go far in garnering you a
perk or two more than the next guy, though.
