Do Casinos Punish Lucky Players?

Except the Mirage.

I called casino marketing and asked why a player on a two-night stay
with about $150K coin-in wouldn't get a single offer to return.

The response was that I must have had some mail returned to sender
and that stopped all the offers.

.........

Am I the only one smelling something fishy here?

Well, casinos have been known to "punish" lucky players. Sometimes
casino offers will dry up after hitting a nice dollar or higher Royal,
but (at least in my experience) this usually happens only in the
smaller, "locals" casinos. Casinos have also been known to take
drastic measures against players who have the "nerve" to hit large
denomination royals, (i.e. such as on $25 machines) which is just
stupid on the casino's part, since there is really no correlation
between a player's skill level and the ability to hit Royals.

In your situation however, the most likely scenario is that your
account somehow just got coded to "no mail" in the computer completely
by accident. Other people have reported similar problems from time to
time. If this is the case, the player's club people should be able to
fix this with a simple click of the mouse, and you should start to
receive mail soon. If you still don't receive any mail for a couple of
months from this casino, then you might assume the more sinister
hypothesis that you are being punished.

One $20,000 royal and three $4,000 royals are big news to you
but to the Mirage they are really small change. They may indeed bar you
after continued success, but you likely need to get $250,000 or more
ahead for that to happen. And probably you need to get ahead on their
loosest machines (Spin Poker DB definitely does not qualify) for them to
be worried about you. My guess is that something accidental happened and
you're assigning sinister motives to the Mirage because of recent some
recent good fortune. A few phone calls and you'll get it straighted out.

Not VP, but the Mirage is not a sweat shop.

I had a session at Mirage a while back where I won
over $25,000 playing blackjack. I am sure they
tracked my play through the eye but either they just
tolerated my play or I fooled their program. Anyway,
I got a good number of decent offers from them and had
no problems when I took them up on an offer. Since
blackjack players come under higher scrutiny than VP
players for advantage play, I think it was just a
marketing screw up that you did not receive offers.

Ummm, I dunno about that one. I really try to avoid the MGM Mirage
properties if at all possible. I've never seen a corporation so
obsessed with taking every last possible quarter out of their players,
and God help you if you get lucky and beat them a couple of times in a
row. There are much better spots to play elsewhere, but if you only
play Jacks, well, as long as you promise to lose, I guess you'll be ok.

I had a trip at one of their Vegas properties several months ago where
the host refused to comp a $300 food bill because I beat them for the
trip, like $2K on a $100K ci play. After a lot of wrangling, we ended
up splitting the bill, but this is the type of aggravation which in my
experience is par for the course there.

It's simply an evil and arrogant organizaton which does you the
biggest favor taking your money. Which makes it sweeter when I find
spots to take their's.

My host at the Mirage disagrees with you. In fact, my winnings
weren't "small change" since my theoretical for the two trips was
more than offset by the cost of the comped room nights and food (non-
gourmet, by the way). And, obviously, there was no actual loss which
could have also "written off" the comps.

Since that happened on back-to-back trips the computer did delete
me from receiving future offers. That information was confirmed to me
as well.

I never implied "sinister motives". But, sorry Bob, casinos can and
do punish lucky players, big AND small. They just did.

If I wanted to tell you I would, it's my MO to not be specific lest
someone be able to track my identity from the story. Some of the suits
do read VPFree, you know.

Look at it as something akin to a tradeoff if you think my
participation here is valuable. But I will say this much, it's pretty
much the attitude throughout the entire organization, I can give you
individual stories from 5 different properties along the same lines
(completely arrogant management).
