I am going to Reno 8/10 for ten days. I have no history in Reno, went there once on a Harrah's charter several years ago, hence no marketing offers. Being that it is against my religion to pay for a hotel in a casino town, I called a host. Casino that also has a store in Shreveport where I do have a history. I thought he could look up my history and perhaps do something for me. Alas, he said he had no access to their records on his computer.. So I told him something to the tune of:"Guess I need to call Harrah's then, I am diamond there".

Things must be slow in Reno. said host asked me a few questions, and simply on the basis of my compelling charm gave me a reservation for the entire ten days, the first three comped and he is sending a limo to pick me up at the airport. I asked him if it turned out that I pissed him off after the first three days due to not enough theo so he could not comp my room further if it was ok to move to the Atlantis or Peppermill since I had heard on the "grapevine" that they had easy comps? He said I could do that.

ElD Reno is basically a waste of time for out of towners who play VP so
the host actually did you a favor.

OK, I'll bite. About 4 years ago, I used to go to Vegas 13 weeks a
year and was regarded as a "pro" by many I met playing VP. As a
quarter VP player, after reviewing the data base, I don't see much
opportunity for comped rooms and hardly any play approximating 101%
other than progressive FP Deuces or some form of Bonus Deuces. The
only real opportunities I see are Fiesta Rancho, The Palms and Sam's
Town.

Two weeks ago, after reviewing the data base I decided to go to Reno
instead. In fact, I will probably return to Reno rather than go to
Vegas if I can get my rooms comped in advance rather than the 4 out
of 7 I got comped (earned comps through play) last trip. I play
$8,000 to $10,000 coin in per day.

I hope someone can convince of my error, since I much prefer Vegas.

I'm not sure what gave you the impression that I feel that Vegas is a
better play than Reno because IMO it is not. Reno still has a vast
selection of FPVP and decent BB at some properties.

My post was specific to the ElD which has decent VP but little, if
any, BB for non-locals.

I just got back from Reno. Played the only quarter FPDW in town at Silver Legacy, and the machines are terrible-uprights-very slow and poor touch. No meal deals. Had Fri and Sat free at Circus was the only reason I went. I can't imagine going back. Good luck reaping 101% in that town!

My apology to hockeystl. I misread his original post and didn't
understand the ElD reference.

You must have missed the 101% JW slant tops at SL on the 2nd floor.

I'm not disagreeing that things (gambling opportunities) aren't as good as they once were for out of towners, but we still go once a year to the El Dorado. I get a birthday offer each year which includes a free room for two nights and a $60 credit at the Prime Rib room. The offer states that there will be no charge to my players account. For around 10K a day, we get Gold Room access and we have gotten a players suite for the past three years. Our points normally pay for the rest of our meals.
Other benefits of Reno (specifically downtown)

    Free shuttle to/from the airport.
They are building a AAA baseball stadium downtown, easily within walking distance of the casinos.
    Harrah's auto museum
    A local artist art district
Truckee river - kayak and tube float park
    12 plex movie house
Ability to go from one casino to another without walking 1/2 mile

Like I said, not as good as it once was, but we like the slower pace of Reno.

Well..no. It all boils down to what's near you locally. I can
appreciate the members who like a place like Casino Royale or choose
Reno over Vegas. I live on Long Island so I'm three hrs. by car/bus
to AC. If I only want a nice room and decent VP I have it there.
When I go to Vegas I need something more..and the sights and sounds of
the Strip still appeal to me. So I have to look for my "bargains" on
the Strip, which is why although 7 Stars I will probably stiff HET
while playing and then staying for part of my vaca at Wynn. However,
my 2-4 trips a year are now just one and that one has been halved as
far as days is concerned.
