Discards Reappearing in a Different Suit

I am a first time poster to the group and 2 year VP player. Before
posing my question, I should also state that I believe in the
integrity of the machines. At the same time, however, I have this
nagging thought that something "seems to happen" way too often while
I am playing. I would like to see if others see the same thing or
if I'm alone on this.

The situation is that you hold 4 of the 5 dealt cards, only to see
the discard show up in a different suit (7H to 7S, for example).
The math seems to indicate that this should occur 3 times out of 47,
or 1 time out of 15.7, but it seems to me that it happens at a much
higher rate. I have not taken the time to count the occurrences,
but I am wondering if others have had the same impression, and if
so, has anyone actually taken the time to count them over a decent
period of time.

I thought I would verify this. We have an IGT multigame video poker
machine at home. It was manufactured 5/93.
We counted the number of times that we held 4 cards and drew 1. Out
of 146 times that we held 4 during normal play, we drew the same
denomination 9 times. I believe that we all have selective memory.

I expect most have this same impression. In fact, because of the very
close pattern between some pips (a spade and a club, for example) , on
occasion I have the fleeting impression when playing quickly that I've
drawn the very same card as my discard.

However, what's likely at play here is that any random occurance is
typically grouped. Several events may occur together and then be
absent for an extended period of time. So when this occurs say, 3 out
of 5 times, it really catches our attention. When it doesn't occur at
all over the course of an hour or longer we don't notice, unless we're
actively counting.

Another case that catches our attention is when we hold 4 cards in
multiply and see the same card appear in more than one hand on the
draw. Several have remarked on the apparent frequency of this in the
past and questioned the randomness of multiplay machines.

As the game show use to say," Good answer!" Maybe it still does.

I think Harry covered this very well but I'll add a small addition. I
play a game, One Eyed Jacks Wild, where 4 to a SF or WRF pays more
than a pat straight. As a result you hold 4 cards and HOPE the 5th
card switches to the same card that fills the SF. Believe me, it
doesn't happen very often.
