I used to call my cellular voice mail and leave messages.

Don't know about the recorder, but I've seen a player pull out a PDA to keep his playing records, presumably on a spreadsheet he set up (I was playing next to him and putting my records on my 3x5 cards, my sophisticated record-keeping system, and he showed me what he used).

PS 3x5's are cheaper unless you use several thousand of them over the projected life of your PDA, or (most likely) you have some other use for the PDA

Cameras used to be forbidden in casinos, but I've seen lots of people taking pictures of themselves in front of their royal or other slot jackpot. With cameras built into cell phones now, it's getting darn near impossible for them to control.

Of course, cell phones are otherwise worthless in most casinos, which, like the basements of large hotels, must be lined in lead or something to keep reception impossible.

I know of someone who was detained in a casino backroom for using a
PDA near slot machines. After surveillance footage was reviewed, the
person was released, but not before being advised not to use the
device around the machines again.

PDA is different ballgame. One can have WinPoker installed in a PDA
(like the one I have) and do analysis or find out the Best Hold for
the current draw s/he has in the machine.

On the other hand, a digital voice recorder is mainly used for voice
recording (although the new ones like the one from Sony doubles as an
mp3 player too).

A friend of mine (a cop) told me that the use of such digital voice
recorder should be okay as long as I clearly state on my recording
something like:
"This recording is to keep track of my current vp session for Income
Tax purposes only." or something similar.
In case the casinos allow, what other good info should one include in
the recording?

I'm curious as to how long ago this was.

I can remember when the use of any cell phone in a casino was treated
with aggressive suspicion - now they're ubiquitous.

Of course you can't use a digital voice recorder.
That's a "device", and the 1985 statute enacted to combat hidden computers
outlaws those.
You could get ten years in prison.

Of course, and iPod is also a device. Listening to one could get you ten
years in prison.

Then again, as Stanford Wong noted, pens and paper are also devices and
using them could get you ten years in prison.

Come to think ot it, buying in for $20 at the bar for a free drink and then
cashing out is also a trick -- a.k.a., a device.
That could get you ten years in prison.

I was actually threatened with this when I was writing something down
at Eddie's in Reno. I don't think Eddie's lasted very long. Does
anyone else remember it?

Lets just all take the ten years and forget the gambling. That will show them! LICS

This occured mid-to-late last year at a casino in Vegas.

Loophole....

If or when you get called for an audit, mention to government rep, "I
play at Eddie's. I couldn't keep a diary of my play. Security at
Eddie's wouldn't let me update my records.

Cheers
