Digests

7. Digests
Date: Sun Mar 25, 2007 4:09 pm ((PDT))

Does anyone know what is going on with the digests?

The last eight I have received have been numbered
3763,3767,3775,3801,3812,3838,3872,and 3889.

In the past, with the occasional exception, they have always been
numbered in sequence.

The fact that numbers (and many of them) are missing suggests that a
significant amount of content has been skipped, but that does not
really appear to be the case.

I just noticed this on another listserve I subscribe to via Yahoo, and made a similar inquiry. I was told that they are now incrementing the digest number by the number of messages or something like that, so after digest #10, if there are two messages, the next one is #12, or something.

I used to save digests and the numbers would let me know if I "lost" one, but now the numbers have no value at all for me, except to confuse, as you suggest.

I guess you can still check for missing messages by subtracting the
number of messages in the current digest, and comparing the result
with the number on the previous digest (i.e., current digest # say
4000 has 5 messages - previous digest should be # 3995).

It seems that Yahoo has created a pretty twisted way to do things.
