2b. Re: What's the dumbest play you've witnessed that worked?
Date: Mon Feb 4, 2008 8:00 pm ((PST))This is actually a wonderful situation in the endgame of a blackjack
tournament. If your chip stack is large enough to allow 4 bets on the table
and
you're way behind splitting 10's and getting an ace on both will allow you to
have two doubled 11's in play. If you need a huge chip win, it's about the
best possible situation you could ever hope for.Just one example of how tournament blackjack play differs tremendously from
the casino version.
Very true - tournament strategy is completely different from "normal" blackjack strategy -- including the above-mentioned (and otherwise atrocious) play of doubling down either on a first-two-cards blackjack or (if permitted) a made "soft" twenty-one.
AND, unlike "normal" strategy, the above plays in a tournament can be correct in special circumstances even if they would otherwise have negative EV -- you're playing (usually) with tournament chips, not real money, and the object is to have enough to win, or to move on to the next round -- if you're behind enough, you want to get as much money on the table as possible and then hope to win all bets.
You might even double down on hard twelve or higher, if that's the only way you can bet enough to win enough to "get there".
