DIAD (long and probably too much info for most)

I do not understand why so many people fear W2G's. The more the better and the more jackpots the better. Isn't that really the name of the game in video poker?

More concerning to me would be playing for points & slot club status than playing for as many W2G's as possible.

I really like the Horseshoe and probably will be mid diamond by years end. I have to be careful about W-2's. On social security and husband pension and I do not want to have to pay extra for medicare, real estate taxes, etc. And since I am from Illinois, Indiana takes out almost 4 percent tax that I do not see as I am not a professional gambler and cannot file as such. In total I had few 4/kinds and no 4 deuces. Lost about $800 but 2 years ago won a total of $14,000 w2's which put us over the limit for some real estate exemptions.

Probably because of a little thing called reality, with which you have
little acquaintance.

Rob,

Everyone has different circumstances. As a senior, you have a fixed income, and many senior benefits will vanish with too many W2s.

As an example for you, some seniors play a lower denomination and/or J/B and deuces so there is a less chance of accumulating lots of W2s.
Of course I love jackpots who doesn't but I have to be careful in my situation with medicare, etc.

To each his own Rob, I tried my best to explain the reality.

There is no need to talk down on someone Tabbycat. Rob has played more than most people on this board and probably knows the tax implications as well as the rest of us. People need to realize that if you dont want W2s than you need play 25 cent(non progressive) or lower to avoid them. If someones goal is make DIAD or be at the diamond level playing low denomination poker with poor pay table options than be prepared to play a long time. If getting those comps outweighs the tax hassle on higher denom machines than so be it. I think people should be more worried about the poor tables that are shown in many of the pics. In the long run that will cost someone more than tax write offs and comps(if they play enough.) Harrahs properties in Vegas have some pretty bad poker but people would rather lose money and get their free room. I know other CE properties have decent poker in other parts of the country so that's a different story.

IN actually 3.4% but being from IL you will then effectively pay another
1.6% to IL.
Also in IL that can have the effect of eliminating the "circuit breaker" for
prescription drugs as well as real estate tax.

Dealt,

I just explained to Rob a short time ago how W-2s raise your AGI and can cause a lot of financial pain for many people. Rob admitted he did know anything about the tax implications of W-2s, but here he is again making the same idiotic statement.

The poster explained she was playing APDW a very high EV game and avoiding W-2s. She obviously knows what she is doing unlike Rob.

I haven't filed a W2g forever and I've never been audited because of it. You people worry too much about being audited. Take my route and never report your winnings.

A true gambler. I hope you don't get caught. I wouldn't do it, because I don't like the taste of bologna and am honest.

Any small hit over that produces a W2G is lost on state taxes. And I had learned last year, in some cities, there is tax on gambling wins.
That is why some of us avoid them.

Yes, but it happens occasionally, and they're not allowed to become
extended threads.

It's always appreciated if members refrain from extending a political

1. Avoid giving your or anyone else's email address to any web site.
2. Instead of forwarding email, cut and paste the text or edit to remove

I have discovered that you live in Illinois you will pay 5% tax on your W2G and there is no offset for losses. Also, if you are over 65 and get a high dollar amount of W2G forms you incur an increase in both your medicare and medicare RX costs. We are now playing quarters - deuces wild.

Being audited is not the point. Your criminal activity is the point.

Oh, I suspect they have "caught" you ... and have been figuring your taxes year after year for you with the most adverse means possible. The reason you haven't heard from them is they are finding REFUNDS, which you have been forfeiting by not filing. Hmmm, I wonder how much that might add up to over 27 years? Don't forget to add for legitimate deductions that you could have claimed.

Once you retire and employer withholding ends, the situation could change dramatically unless you have withholding coming from other sources. When they DO find you OWE (based on reportable income), they will be in touch with customary penalties and interest.

This might also start the audit-ball rolling and where that stops nobody knows (up to statute of limitations).

Of course I could be wrong ...
