detained/questioned

I find it hard to believe you were stopped for looking at and/or touching
just one machine! Really odd! I do wonder what you were wearing, age,
appearance - perhaps that had something to do with it? As a middle aged woman I
have stopped at and actually touched many VP machines in many casinos to check
the pay schedules and then walked away.

Other than appearance, my thought is perhaps you did look a bit like someone
on the guard's list of suspicious characters. Perhaps you stayed and stared
for a long time? (10 seconds might seem long...)

I think if it happened to me - I would say, "What is the matter?" "I was
looking at the pay schedule on that machine to decide if I wanted to play or
not." And if they asked for my ID, I would say "sure - and here is my player's
card" (if I had one)

Perhaps if you had quickly handed over the ID plus saying you were just
looking at the pay schedule, you would have had a "ok, sorry..."

but since you didn't want to show the ID that caused even more suspicion?

I'm guessing that the player had been backed off for blackjack play
at some point in the past. There are a few casinos that I would not
want to show my ID to. I've never been trespassed but have been
backed off. Most of these places have unplayable blackjack now but
still act like they need to be careful.
