constant mowing and attention. We have a 16 HP turbo lawn tractor that
helps with this. It will sure be nice to have a small piece of property
that doesn't need constant attention.

Right on! As a former East Coaster myself, your move
to the LV valley will surely be a complete
360d-turnaround. Less lanscaping work and more time
for playing VP. Leave your riding mowers and most
garden tools behind. If you opted for a xerophytic
landscape, you need: minimum amount of irrigation
(drip), less time to remove weeds (much fewer than the
rainy Atlantic Coast), and less much of everything
such as pruning, potting, and dormant oil spraying.
Try to avoid any square footage of turf as it is
wasteful of precious water. A trip to a local nursery
store will easily convince you that desert plant
species are just as aesthetically nice as the ones
we're accustomed to in the NY/ NJ metro area. But --
Oh Boy -- I missed those luscious Rutgers tomatoes
that I used to grow in our backyard!
