Deal or No Deal ?

Howdy

I recently played VP for two hours and put thru 2k and lost 200 in cash. I
was rewarded or compensated with a 35 dollar gift certificate. Do I look at
this as having lost 165 or gaining 35 because I would have lost the money
regardless of the promo?

Interesting question. I'm wondering what kind of gift certificate it was. If the gift certificate was for a "near cash" vehicle (such as a Visa check card), I would count it as a $165 session loss. If the gift certificate was for a business that I do not use, I wouldn't count it at all. Put differently, I would count the value of a Visa check card, but I would not count the value of a gift certificate to the Acme Bowling Ball Shop.

Additionally, if the gift card is for a store or restaurant, I would never count the value of a gift card until it's spent -- I've had too many expire without being used up (because they get forgotten - or they're partially used and I didn't make it back to the store to spend the rest.)

For what purpose are you "looking at this"? If its for your own
personal record keeping, then its your decision.

If its for tax records, then I would count the session as a $200 loss.
