DBL UP and VP

He's correct that doubling up increases the game's variance (very significantly, depending on how often you do it), but it has absolutely no affect on the expected return.

Of course, increasing the variance increases your Risk of Ruin.

FWIW, some prior thoughts I formed re doubling:

Doubling, as an added wager to other game play, has no impact on EV (a
breakeven play neither increases nor decreases it).

However, players who actively double typically play few poker hands,
both because of a substitution of doubling activity for game play and
a slower, distracted pace in playing hands. Thus, for players of a
negative vp game, it's reasonable to say that doubling increases their EV.

Doubling, as performed by the typical player I observe, increases game
variance. However, if doubling is retrained to winnings of one or two
bets, the variance associated with that doubling is generally lower
than that of the underlying vp game.

Harry, I think you just said doubling has no impact on EV but has an
impact on EV  I know what you mean and I agree. In fact, it points
out that what we refer to casually as EV is a lot more complicated
than our usage typically implies.

I get that you get it ;). But just to ensure that it doesn't sound
like "double"speak, I'll put it clearly and concisely:

A doubling, in itself, has no impact on EV. However, when the
consequence of doubling is that fewer negative EV wagers are made,
overall EV is increased.
