Dbl Joker

Hi. One of the better games at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut is 9/5 Double Joker. The basic strategy sheet recommends holding one card 5thru9 with a single Joker when you have no better plays available...and sometimes you just hold the single Joker. About 75% of the time I can figure out which card to hold by considering flush, and sometime straight, penalty cards. I am trying to nail down the other 25%. Does anyone in the group know of any literature, free or otherwise, that will aid me in this quest??
                                                Thanks. Dick McK.

OK, but this is really geeky. It's not perfect but close.

1. Hold Joker+Ten in preference to other single cards
2. To decide among 5-9 and J, assign each card penalty points as follows:
- Flush penalty is 2.5
- Straight penalty ranges from 5 for adjacent rank to 2 for farthest rank
- Straight flush penalty is an additional 1
3. If all cards have >7 penalty points, only hold the Joker
4. Otherwise hold the Joker and the card with the fewest penalty points.
Jack wins ties.

Have fun!

"C S" has provided the straightforward calculations by which the
optimal single Joker + 1 card hold can be determined. I'll add that
this calculation (or a similar one) is contained in the advanced
strategy offered up by Video Poker Strategy Master (vpsm).

Along with WinPoker and Frugal VP, vpsm is a critical program to add
to your vp tool kit if you want to nail most game penalty considerations.
