Such a true article.

It's been bothering me lately reading some of the Poker magazines that are around and seeing how they idolize these very young (21 years old) "professional online poker players". I actually think that not only is it misleading but is morally and ethically wrong.....but I also think that those who write these articles are more interested in selling more magazines to other young wannabees than anything else.
And as always, buyer beware.

Recently there was a long article about a 21 year old who has already had several sessions where he lost over a million dollars. I saw him on Full Tilt High Stakes poker the other day and he was $216,000.00 down.
What's to admire?
The fact that he has other days where he might win over a million? Certainly can't count on that.
And more importantly, how will he ever, at this young age, be able to match the excitement and adrenalin he gets from gambling like this?

I've thought about trying to write something to these magazines, but really think it's of no use....it's all centered towards young guys those ages who wouldn't care to listen anyway. And as I read these articles by the young "professionals", it's amazing how often their strategy is revealed by discussing hands that they've won by some bizarre luck or whatever. Except in their case it's always some uncanny "read" on their opponent. Even I could write strategy articles like that.

And I see so many of them playing live in the poker rooms.....so cool with their hoodies pulled up and sunglasses, etc. It's only a very few who have made actual huge amounts of money at this......

The reality of gambling is expressed very well in this article by David Matthews.

Dave's friend J is not a professional gambler (advantage gambler), he's a compulsive gambler. Anyone who would throw their whole bankroll down on a sports bet is an idiot. Betting even 1% of your bankroll is stupid if you don't have the handicapping skills (Winning sports bettors are much rarer than winning poker players). I know I don't have the handicapping skills to beat side bets in sports betting so I stick to middles and scalps.

The TV poker is an illusion that sucks all these young kids in. Poker is the most popular thing kids are watching on TV these days. And every year there is a new crop of 21 year olds. These kids are thinking that the money is gowing on trees.

Whose paying the prize money in all those events? The players are-minus anywhere from 6% to 12% juice. If you play a $1000 event 10% to 12% of the money is removed from the prize pool by the house. Only 10% of the field is payed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that alot of people are going to lose in the long run.

Contrary to popular belief, the poker tournaments are not about poker players. They are about Harrah's, other houses, and ESPN making money.
