Back in the nineties, before all the software, forums, and world
famous video poker players, if you were to walk into GBC or Gamblers
General Store looking for books on video poker, there were lots.
But the only ones worth buying had Dan Paymar's name on them. Two
in particular: Precision Play and The Best of Video Poker Times. I
played his deuce strategy mainly in two spots: Gold River in
Laughlin (1% CB on Thursdays and .67 on Fridays) and at the Oasis in
Mesquite (FPDW Progressive .5 meter). After a few months of play I
decided I had a new occupation. He also taught when and how to play
the Jackpot Cards, which were everywhere at the time, and highly
lucrative. But the play that I love him for is Unlinked Flush
Attack. At first, I played the linked banks. The Riverside in
Lauhglin was the center of the universe for linked bank flush
attackers. World Class vultures, er, I mean flush attackers. The
fastest video poker players in the world....if the light was on.
Elko, Nevada was the first place I saw unlinked flush attack, so I
got out my Dan Paymar Best of Video Poker Times and studied up.
Jackpot!!!! I found the video poker play of the century. Flush
Attack became my staple play for several years. The sweep is the
key. I played it every day in places like Elko, Reno, the Pioneer
in Lauhglin, and the grandaddy of them all, South Shore Lake Tahoe.
35 unlinked flush attacks that I could never get through in a day.
How would you like to run $10,000 a day in action with a 3.5%
overlay for months at a time? 1.7% without a royal. The few full
pays around were an even bigger overlay. The last bank worth working
in this state was at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, Nevada. It
didn't hurt that there was also 5 Unlinked House a Rockin' there
too. Dan's Flush Attack logic was easy to apply to House a Rockin'
and The Max. Flush Attack is pretty much extinct now. Have you
ever heard the Flush Attackers prayer? Oh Lord, If you will please
send us some more Flush Attacks, we promise not to blow the money
this time! At one time Harvey's at the Lake was the Meter Capitol
of the World. I was able to use Dan's math to figure out when to
play. These are some of the plays: The Mountain Bar had 6/5 Bonus
Poker Quad Progressives; Aces 1%, Small Quads 1%, Generic Quads 1%.
When that Generic meter had twenty extra bets in it, clear the way
for a thundering herd of VP Pros, the race was on. We kayed on the
other meters too. The Aces meter ran away one night and I hit them
for $2400. I don't hold the record though. A friend hit them for
$3600. The Players Bar was 6/5 Jacks; 2% Quad meter, l.5% SF meter,
l.25% RF meter. When the Quad meter hit $250, clear the way. Plus,
there were ten-coin nickel and five-coin quarter progressives all
around the casino with 2% Quad meters, 2% SF meters, and 2% RF
meters. Not to mention quarter and dollar Bonus
Playoff.
Now the year is 2005 and I still make a living playing video
poker. It's 100% of my income. I scout the state for big fat juicy
overlays and then work them. Thin edge single-line is not my
style. After having worked the plays listed above plus big fat
overlays on triple-plays, five-plays, ten-plays and even fifty-plays
and hundred-plays at times, offering me thin edge single-line is
like offering a crackhead a line of
coke.
Dan, you don't know me, but we do have at least one friend in
common, the man from Pahrump. It seems like alot of the famous VP
writers are taking some heat these days. I just wanted to thank you
for those two great books, and to let those who read this forum know
what a fantastic job you've done over the years.
Dan Paymar
Dan has also been a valuable member of this forum. His postings clearly
demonstrate his expert knowledge of video poker, in addition, and more
importantly highlight his decency.

I would also like to give Dan the thanks he deserves. Besides Lenny Frome,
he was the only one that was putting out good VP resources during our early
VP years. Brad and I used his strategy cards for years and they are still
very useful. I always mention his products in the Resource sections of my
books.
Dan and I remain professional and personal friends. This shows that
business people can keep a good relationship even when they have competing
products. We both promote our own products, of course, but I don't believe
we either one has ever spoken or written negatively about each other's
products, either outright or by inference. We both understand that there is
room for many kinds of VP resources. Each VP writer brings a unique
viewpoint with his products and this diversity helps the VP student. Each
player can choose the tools/systems that fits their interests and goals.
I have read/used ALL the products of my "competitors" at one time or another
for the last 15 years since we took up VP and they have each put me a little
further up the path of skilled play. Therefore, it would be stupid of me to
badmouth any of them. I had to think it over long and hard before I gave
the Frugal name to any new products. They had to be something that
presented a new concept - or an old concept in a new way - that would be
helpful to a VP player.
Now - I am going to do my best to be a more polite member of this group and
keep personal opinions to myself - and concentrate on giving useful VP
information.

Updated Second Edition of
"The Frugal Gambler."
Hi there
As long as your giving thanks to vp writers I would like to mention
Wong who published Professional Video Poker in 1988. The book is a 50
page 8 1/2 x 11 book including cut out strategy cards for some
progressives. At about the same time there was L Frome with two books;
one for AC and another for Vegas. I have always got a charge out of the
Lenny Frome word for discard everything; "RAZGU". Last in my war chest
of vp info was Wongs 'Villa Crespo' software that had all the games of
that time, the late 80s - early 90s. To analyze a special progressive
or pay schedule, my 286 computer (if I can remember that far back) had
to run a couple hours to get answer. That's what I used. My games
mostly were jacks 8/5 progs and FPDW at dollar. I figured at least $30
an hour + comps etc. Just played recreational about 5-6 days a month in
Vegas. AC was VP wasteland.
Both writers were right on the money and the works were worth buying.
Cheers ....Jeep
