The Jack does NOT make this hand 1 hi, RIGHT?

case the jack is correct because the hand contains no 7's or higher
that would be straight penalties against the jack. This is the
corollary to the hand discussed here about a week ago where you
would hold the SF3-2 in preference to the jack when the hand
contains both an 8 and 9, even though the fifth card is not
suited with the jack.

General rule: With SF3-2 with internal straight penalty and a jack,
hold the jack if the penalty card is not suited with it, but hold
the SF3 if the penalty card is suited with the jack.

Exception 1: If the SF3 includes 8 and 9 (7 and 9 in 9/7DB), hold
the SF3 even if the penalty card is unsuited with jack.

Exception 2: If the SF3 is 6 high, hold the jack even if the penalty
card is suited with jack.

The logic in both of these exceptions is based on the possibilty of
drawing a straight while holding the jack alone.

Hask wrote an excellent analysis of the problem, quoting liberally from
the Dancer Daily Winner's Guide on the game. My primary objection is
that he didn't cite the source of his quotations. So I just did.

While I undoubtedly learned this (and just about everything else I
know about VP) from Bob's writings, I did not have the book in front
of me when I posted. I just saw some misinformation and felt I
should correct and clarify it based on my general knowledge of the
game. I can't believe that the post contained actual quotations from
Bob's book, but if it did, I'm truly sorry.

Apology accepted. And what's true is that I didn't check his/her actual
wording against the Winner's Guide so it may not have been word for
word. Using the SF3 -2 notation along with the general rule and it's
exceptions, though, is the way it's presented in the Winner's Guide and
I jumped to perhaps the wrong conclusion. If so, it's my place to be
truly sorry.
