Computers XVP OFF TOPIC

I am contemplating the purchase of a laptop and am confused with terms
such as Celeron, AMD, Pentium, etc.

I use my computer PRIMARILY for email, analysis using winpoker and
Frugal Video Poker, printing letters or other things copied from web
pages, and some (not much) web surfing.

I do NOT play video games, listen to music, watch movies, etc.

My present desktop is 2.3 GHZ, hard drive 74 GB

I do not want to overbuy. please advise as to what would be adequate
for my needs.

Use Email and do NOT post on the mailing list.

For the purposes that you mention, any computer that you buy will do the job.
Your biggest concerns are therefore, screen size and weight. Decide what you want in
those 2 areas and buy the cheapest machine that fits the bill. If you are the type of person
that feels that they may need extensive technical support, then you should check the reputation
of the manufacturer for support policies.

I once purchased a cheaper computer because I really didn't need any more. I was frustrated for five years until I replaced it with a much more expensive one with more speed and capabilities. I now won't consider anything that doesn't have a Intel processor. I suggest that you buy a name brand with a good service recommendation. "Consumers Reports" does good comparsions for buying different computers for different uses. Believe me a few dollars spent on research may mean more pleasure for your money.

I have had problems with Intel chips in the past.

Personally, I avoid the monopoly companies. I try and avoid Intel and
Microsoft whenever possible. But both Intel and AMD chips are
good(you might still want to avoid the Intel Celeron (Celery) chips
though).

Also Intel Centrino is merely a Pentium M and a Intel Wifi inside with
$50 extra tacked on to the purchase price. It is usually cheaper to
avoid Centrino and purchase any old Wifi with whatever chip you decide
to buy.
