Comps (was NYNY, LHV, etc)

Just some miscellaneous information from last weekend.
I stayed at NYNY last weekend (Saturday through Monday nites) and ran $29000+ through on $ pickem and multi-play NSUD. Room was comped upfront, and on check out they would not pick up my only room charges of $31.96 at the coffee shop. VIP said my comp account was overdrawn with just the room comp even though it was just a regular room. It looks like they think their rooms are now worth over $10K coin-in per nite. My host was not there when I checked out, and I have sent her an e-mail asking about this. I have never paid for anything before at NYNY over a number of trips, and although my play was a little lighter than usual, I was still surprised when they wouldn't comp the $31.

We also found this to be the case in the MGM Mirage casinos on a recent visit. They claim they are comping the rooms in advance and we must "pay for the rooms" before any other comps can be considered. It didn't make any difference which casino we were in, same song second verse. I tried to get a buffet comp in the Bellagio and, even though we had plenty of points for the meals, were refused because we were staying in a sister property, the MGM. Just charge it to your room, we were told, and MGM will pick it up when you check out. Wrong!

"Burned once, twice shy." When we moved to Treasure Island I checked with a slot host. Same story, got to play at least $8000 per day then they will consider more comps. Evidently this is a corporate policy and no longer left up to the individual casinos (they all use the same slot card and database). Also doesn't look like past play is worth anything toward future comps, other than getting on their mailing list. So with this knowledge in hand we gave TI very little play and spent most of our time at Sam's Town -- they just happen to be having a 6X points weekend. TI in the past have treated us very well, providing rooms and all our meals. No longer. Now for some sour grapes; it's just a well, they only have 4 full pay VP machines anyway.

A side note: after we moved out of MGM Mirage hotels (to the Venetian), we were able to get the comped buffet at the Bellagio. The V had pretty much the same policy, pay for the rooms before getting any more comps. But with them, it was understandable for we had never stayed or played there before (just a little to get a slot card and into their database).

considered.......

It seems as though this type of policy would be doomed to backfire on
the casinos as more and more people catch on. After a while, the
typical trip pattern for many people would be: Trip #1, if you get a
coupon for free rooms from a casino that you know uses this
restrictive comp policy, then stay at their casino, but give them
little or no play at all. Play at some other casinos during that
trip that aren't part of the same group and that have good games, and
use that play to get your meals comped. Then perhaps your play at
those other casinos will generate future free room offers from them.
Trip #2, try putting in some play at the original casino from the
first trip and see if they'll comp a meal for you, since you aren't
staying there this trip. If so, great. Maybe they'll even send you
some more free room offers, which will give you another chance to
stiff them again on trip #3!!!!

Perhaps this is not the most convenient approach, but at least you'll
get your meals paid for. And maybe if enough players take this
approach, the casinos might re-think this policy.

My mistake. I should have indicated twenty-five cent machines. And I
was thinking of the JoB machines, didn't know about the NSUD. We have
in the past played the full pay in the high limit area -- back when we
were working for a living and had a good imcome. (But I would rather
have the free time than the money).

Though I am very new to the Vegas scene (3 years) I am totally amazed on how some of these casinos treat their guests. The fact that they are looking for some big action (to me 10k per day is big) in order to comp a room or meal is just crazy. All the casinos better rethink their policies and get back to the basics. If they are not filling their rooms, then chances are they are not getting the play. There use to be an unwritten rule with my dad and his generation about Vegas and it is "If you have to pay for meals and rooms in Vegas then Vegas is not doing you right" I have to say that is true and if Vegas continues to believe that you can charge crazy money for rooms AND expect you to drop some serious cash in the casinos then they are wrong!
