Comment on Guarantee Play

On one of my first visits to Las Vegas (1987),
the Riviera
had guaranteed play slot machines. You paid $20, got so many spins and kept
whatever you won.

I knew less than nothing about gambling, but wasn’t attracted by that ruse. Despite
a hawker, coupons at the door and ads in the glossy’s, seldom did I see a
player enter that area. In more recent years, the Four Queens had a similar
machine grouping. I don’t think that lasted more than a year. So, the concept
is not new and exciting, but tried and failed.

The smart or suspicious gambler smells a rat and doesn’t
play.

The naïve simply will not stick $20 into a machine and be
locked in. They wish to move around until they find a hot machine.
Who hasn’t sat down, stuck in a $20.00, only to find sticky
keys, light on the screen, a cold draft, a thumper, a rude smoker, a rude
non-smoker, a broken chair... We cash out and move.
No one wants to be trapped.

I can’t envision the target group for this concept.
