I'm about to head back to LV and Laughlin 5/8 thru 5/16. I like to
play the 1 cent 9/6 JOB 50 plays at the Palms and the 5/10 cent 9/6 JOB
50 plays at Laughlin. Through some long past previous posts I drew the
conclusion that I should play 20 or 25 hands to reduce the effect
of "co-variance." Based on that info, my wife and I have played the
Laughlin machines at 20 hands, especially when pushing for DIAD. Now
I'm wondering why we don't go ahead play 50 hands. Can someone explain
in simple layman terms what co-variance is and its effect on multi-hand
play and why 20 to 25 hands is a "break point?"Thanks in advance!!

Laughlin-Harrahs 50-plays: alot of the discussion over the years has been
about target coin-in for Diamond in a Day. 20 hands of nickels could get you
easily to the magic number of 1,800 Tier points even by yourself. Now that you
need 3,000, playing just $5 a pop might mean for a very long day.
One thing to consider at Harrahs-L is if you are going to try to earn drawing
tickets for their daily drawings. Their format is unique for HET. These are
old fashioned paper drawing tickets. The majority of the value for winning a
daily drawing is if you can come back for the Big Bang Finale...which is June
10th for the current "Set Sail Dream Cruise" system-wide promo.
Five daily winners get invites for the three weekend nights this time around.
You get 50 extra entries for the in-house June 10th drawings and a shot at
the daily winners drawing. Now if you are in good standing and have been
getting periodic H-L offers (like for concerts and tourneys) you will get invited
anyway for this BBF weekend with some play during the first part of the promo
period. So the value of 3 comped nights is lost.
But if you are a low roller or have recently have been demoted back down to
Gold Tier level winning 3 weekend nights can be a big deal.
Back to the 50-plays. The dime level has been turned-on and there are now 9
of them, 9/6 Jacks is the best game. H-L changed the rules during the last
promo "Bloomin' Bucks",on how to earn drawing tickets. It used to be any quad
on the 50-plays, limit one ticket per pull. During this last promo it was
changed to "A $50 or more single, instant win" gets a ticket. Quarter and above
VP it still was any quad. I do not know if the current promo uses this
criteria. I assume it does since this really cuts back the busy-ness of the floor
people.
So you want those $50+ hands to earn a ticket at nickel and dime levels.
Playing 50-play nickels it will take a dealt straight or better. Playing 50-play
dimes being dealt two pair will do it.
But to avoid the slowdown of a dealt 50-line dime straight-flush ($1,250), 47
lines works. Also 46 two-pairs and 1 full-house is good for $50.50 hit to
get a drawing ticket.
Figuring out the value of the promo beyond the room nights gets a bit fuzzy.
Daily 1st place usually is $100/1000 Bonus points. But the Big Bang Finale
drawings are a crapshoot. What is the Grand System-Wide Prize this time...14
day cruise and $50k?
