Illinois casinos lost 17% since Jan. No smoking ban is really kicking in.

Correllation does not equal causation. There is no more reason to
believe that these events are related than that the loss in casino
revenue was caused by my recent purchase of an IPod (EVEN
THOUGH...THEY HAPPENED at THE EXACT SAME TIME!!!!).

Sorry, but I beg to differ with you. Revenue was doing fine in ALL

Officals of the Illinois Gaming Association estimate that the state
will lose as much as 20 percent of gaming revenues as a result of the
smoking ban because of gamblers traveling to other nearby riverboat
states.

And Susan, don't ever expect that smoking ban proponents will admit
that the smoking ban caused the loss of revenue. It doesn't serve
their purpose.

Historically, you can't look at the first 6 months or so. Business always declines during that initial period of a smoking ban. Also, so far it has always returned afterwards. We'll see.

I did not deny that there was a CORRELATION. What I SAID was that
there was no CAUSATION implied by that correlation. Let me explain:

A. In 1988, 2000, and 2004, we elected a Republican president.
B. In 1989, 2001, and 2005, the tangerine harvest hit record lows.

There is definitely a correlation between A and B.

There is no causal link (no causation) between A and B.

For any events A and B, the fact that A happens, then B happens,
does NOT imply that A CAUSED B.

Therefore, to use the example of casino smoking bans and revenue,
the fact that revenues dropped after the smoking ban does NOT mean
that the smoking ban caused the drop in revenue.

I hope this clears up your confusion.

I haven't read the posts on the underlying topic, but it's not
necessary in order to agree with this particular statement made by
tra...crackers.

How about the recession or the weather. At one time there was almost
perfect correlation between chewing tobaco sales and junvenile
delinquency.
