I have often wondered what most people do about that. Personally I don't let a machine eat up too much of my money. There have been just as many good hits for me on the first or second play. Sometimes I watch people feed and feed and feed hoping for a hit. They say it will hit if you just be patient. So what is your view on changing machines. When is it time?

Some people change machines every ten coins if they don't hit. Others will play, play, and play until their last dollar is gone believing in the math. There is no correct answer for this question. Best advice is to move when you want to and don't worry about it.
Everyone is different, and while some have similar ideas on how machines operate, and most try to play perfectly according to the math, their playing strategy is different. Over time you will develop your own with what you are comfortable with. Don't devote yourself to someone else's ideas on staying at one machine just because someone told to it would not matter. Maybe you will have better luck moving and maybe not. But you will never know unless you do move. This is a fun game when properly played and unless you are thinking of turning into a VP Pro, play the game and enjoy yourself. Don't worry what others will say. Do what's best for you.

I do subscribe to the theory that the machine will eventually hit -
however, having said that -I have a rule about how much I will put
into a machine. I like you, have had many good hits on my first $20
to convince me that if I am not hitting after a $100 - I should go to
a different machine. Not because of the machine, its a computer, -
but because of what it is doing to me psycologically. I gt to the
point where start to think the machine is "crashing " on me and I
should "reboot" it by just leaving & going to a different machine.
Weird thinking huh? I am a little "nuts" haha

Now there's a point the guy who doesn't think human factors makes a difference might want to chew on. If you're at work, and your computer isn't responding the way you would like it, do you sit there like a dufus all day and whine about it--or do you use someone else's if there's an availability?

If the assumption on which I used the first computer was that all
computers would respond exactly the same, I wouldn't waste my time
trying a different computer. Only if I surrendered that assumption
COULD I use another computer. The only assumption I know of on which
to base playing video poker for profit is that all unseen cards on all
machines always have the exact same chance of occurring as each other.
If I were to surrender that assumption, I would be left with no basis
on which to play video poker for profit.
"Human" factors don't have to be faults, such as short-sightedness.
It's also at least potentially "human" to have strengths, such as a
long-term point of view.

This is not analagous. Here is something analagous.
You sit down at a VP machine and after it accepts $100
you play and lose it all. Now, you try to feed it another
bill, but the bill acceptor stops working. So, rather
than getting a slot tech, you move to another machine.
Nobody ever claimed that there are not valid reasons for
moving. It is moving due to some poor luck that is what
is at issue.

Good Reasons to change machines .....
1. The one you are playing is pi__ing you off. By changing machines you
maintain your composure and are less likely to make mistakes.
2. Someone close by is bugging you.
3. Changing machines gives you a break, allows your brain to relax a little
and thus reduces your error rate.
4. Pros don't switch machines, so if you are a top notch player, switching
machines may help to disguise that fact.

I've seen pro's switch machines. One pro told me "I just lost 90% of my
plays for the last half hour - this sucks" and then tried the machine next
to it.
