Changes on the River

Hi everyone,

I was in Laughlin last weekend for the Aquarius Crazy 4 Poker
tournament and found the following minor changes:

The Spin Poker Deluxe machines at RP have moved from Winner's Wharf
upstairs to the area between the player's club and Subway. They are
sandwiched by short pay 100-plays on either side. I guess they
aren't always short--I saw a guy get a W-2g for catching three
royals at 100-play dimes from 4RF.

It was taking a full $30 coin in for one point at GN on the $.05
Loose Deuces. I put on two points. I hope I can handle all the
offers they will no doubt be sending me.

The 2 $.25 10-play JoB slant tops at Aquarius are no longer between
the cashier and the sports book but are now in the center of the
casino between the front desk and the optimum bank. They were
locked up all weekend by the same couple and out of service when
they weren't there. Was that you??? Anyone??

Pioneer Double Time jackpots are also suspended. I never really
understood how they worked, but there are signs all over the place.
I did use up my old comps by getting a comp slip. Didn't play
there. Now I'll have a reason for not getting my Round-Up.

Had my first ever Don Laughlin sighting in the Riverside Keno lounge
area late one night.

Didn't win the tournament but it really was a lot of fun. Aquarius
does good tournaments. Even the banquet dinner was tasty.
Renovated rooms are nice, too. People were saying the buffet has
improved but I wasn't daring enough to try it.

River walk was deader than I've ever seen it. Even the usual crazy
loud Saturday night at Aquarius was toned down. I've been to
Laughlin at this time of year before and have never seen it this
quiet.

Good luck, everybody!

Drew

Hey Drew. I was in Laughlin this last weekend but didn't run into
you. I noticed a few things in town too, so I guess I can just tag
along on your report.

Did you notice the new perfume smell in the River Palms? I recognized
the odor immediately as the same fragrance from MontBleu at Lake
Tahoe (same owners). I got a $10 scratch off ticket and the cashier
was shocked to see such a "big" one.

I wanted to poke my head in the Regency. In September when I was
there I suspected they were struggling. Confirmed now.... The casino
and restaurant are closed.

Yes, the Pioneer had signs everywhere. Double time suspended-All free
tournaments suspended-All promotions listed in the Round Up
suspended. But they are still open, and getting out the Christmas
decorations. Also it looks like some siding salesman signed a big
contract as they are putting it everywhere on the exterior.

"Even the usual crazy loud Saturday night at Aquarius was toned
down." I was there and making as much noise as possible. They had a
pretty good band playing Saturday night at the Splash.

I stayed at the CB again, and they gave me a suite, but no dining
card this time. I had that fancy multi jet shower, but I adjusted the
sprayer first before getting in. (inside joke)

I cashed in my Tampa Rays baseball ticket at the Riverside, but I did
not see the big "Don". I have never spotted Elvis either. I guess my
raccoon sightings don't count?

I had terrible luck on this trip, but did witness a nice one while
watching football Sunday afternoon at the sportsbar at the EW. A guy
hit the quarter progressive royal for $1300+, and while waiting for
the payoff crew to bring his money, his wife hit another one for
$1202.

I too was in Laughlin last weekend. Harrahs had a golf outing
on Sunday, the 9th. It was at a new course (Los Lagos) in
Bullhead City. It is on Boundary Cove Road. This is the road
to Oatman. It is a good course, but the clubhouse, although
started, will not be completed until fall. Harrahs gave us a
golf banquet Sunday night and from 1 to 3 dozen golf balls
and a "logo" golf shirt. The number of balls received depended
upon the quality of ball selected. Harrahs was busy because of
the golf and they hosted a slot tournament. They also had a
large group from Mary Kay Cosmetics, you know, the "Pink
Cadillac" group.

Inventory seems up to date. They did removed many for the VP
machines that also had video blackjack. They have installed a
new "High Def." blackjack machine that is located in front of
the Sports Book. It is a little smaller than the one at the
Tropicana (it has only two sides -- $2 and $5 BJ with no Poker).
I also saw one of these "High Def" machine at the River Palms
on this trip. I guess one reason I mention this machine is that
it takes $50 to earn a Tier point vs $10 on the old VP machines
that had a blackjack option. That is a lot to pay for 3/2
blackjack and being able to double on any two cards, not just
10 or 11!

Just before finishing my video poker play, late Saturday,
I managed to get a royal on the $1 machine in the far corner
of the non smoking casino. You know, the machine in the corner
near the doors to valet and not far from the hall to the Diamond
Lounge. I guess I had double the luck since it was one of my
last hands expected to be played on the trip.

I managed to get down to River Palms, but that was the only
other casino on this trip. It could explain why I did not see
Drew or Chris. I was at the Palms late late Friday night and
early Saturday morning. I had a $10 River Palms free play
mailer. I played a 8/6 JoB. one coin at a time, $.25 machine
exactly 40 hands and turned the free play into $10.75. I did
play, unsuccessfully, the old $.50 9/6 coin dropper. I played
enough to earn their $1.22 Prime Rib and the 2/1 buffet.
However, I had a lot of free food at Harrahs (banquet, Diamond
Lounge and a $75 food comp) that I left those to expire. If
I had known others were in town they could have been donated
--- as insignificant as those two earned coupons are! Saturday
was dedicated to Harrahs video poker play and Sunday was golf.
We had a room for Sunday night, but my wife, Marjean, had to
teach school Monday morning. Unfortunately , her school
celebrated Veterans Day on the actual day, Tuesday, November
11th and this eliminated a possible 3 day weekend.

Okay, we've got to coordinate better. We could have split a chili dog
at Pioneer or something! I can't believe we were all incognito,
although I didn't make it to Harrah's, either.

Doesn't sound like any of us won too much. After my 12th Royal scare I
played "Vibrant 7s" and "Wizard of Oz." I had better luck on them. At
least they were fun.

Here's to a great 2009! This was probably my last trip of the year to
Nevada.

Now I'm responding to myself. Sorry, but I missed Bob's royal in his post:
CONGRATULATIONS! I can't even remember what a royal looks like. Do they have to be in
the same suit?

Drew, who promises to read more carefully from now on

Let's see: Sharing a chili Dog at the Pioneer, $1.22 dinners, 2 for 1
buffet coupons. Next time I run into either one of you two guys, we are
on our own for a meal. My standards are higher...well just slightly.

Congratulations on the $1 royal to Bob. Bob is a modest man, but I
happen to know he has hit a royal on all denominations from a penny up
to and including the $5 denomination.

WOW - I was there too. I ran into an old vp'er friend of mine (Pat)
from San Fernando. She's doing well. Loves the Joker Poker,
which played a bad joke on me (this time around). Very few 4ks,
which kills the e.v.

That's ok, though, bec. while some were golfing, I was in the HL-
Tournament, and finished in 4th PLACE! First time I EVER scored
above 8000 pts (avg. needed to cash, usually, if paying to 50 places
out of 300-400 entrants). This was a better 'ev' tourney, paying to
100 places, and only 315 entrants. For a FREEROLL - this was GREAT!

After placing in 11th, I thought, ok, avg score 2nd round to maintain
top 100. A better than avg. might secure me $500 for 6th - 10th.
WAS I elated when my 9500 pts got me 4th place for $2K!
Darn - it also is taxable win.

And DANG - always room for 'improvement'. 44 more pts would've tied
me for 3rd ($3000!).

Hope everyone has great end of the year plans....
I'm in 3 more tournaments incl. this weekend, and then in late Dec.
(Some are in LV).
