Changes at Sunset Station

I was just there over the weekend playing in a VP invitational
tournament. Didn't qualify for the prize-money round, but it was
still an interesting experience.

A couple of changes of note:

Host Rebecca Messing has apparently left Sunset. I have no idea where
she went. My new host is Burma, who was kind enough to leave a gift
basket in my room...

The hotel's policy on deposit for incidentals has changed, at least
for those who prefer to pay this in cash upon check-in. The new cash
deposit requirement is a whopping $100 per day, as opposed to the $50
per stay requirement in the past. In the past, I have prefered to do
this rather than offer up my credit card. I'm told the amount blocked
for a credit-card deposit will continue to be $50.

It seems that deposit policies range all over the place, depending on
the company. Main Street Station only recently began requiring a
deposit for comped stays. Meantime, on a pre-comped stay at Bally's
in April, the check-in person simply scoffed and said no deposit was
required for a comped visitor.

Royals to all,

Caseydog

Oh yeah, regarding my play at Sunset. I did not fare well, playing
mostly 50-cent 10-6 DDB. I must be on a Zero-for-50 streak as far as
trying to draw one card for the royal. In fact, my last 10 royals
have been either 3- or 2-card draws.

I don't know the real numbers, but shouldn't one-card-draw royals be
the most frequent kind? (When I look at the jackpot pictures on this
site, I notice only a very few one-card draw royals ....)

According to the Wizard (for FPDW), the probabilities of getting a
royal are:
dealt: 0.069692
holding 4: 0.318806
holding 3: 0.544452
holding 2: 0.055006
holding 0: 0.012044

On the 4 to the royal note , in the last 12 months I have at least (lost
count after 300) around 400 to 500 4 to the royal draws
and have only made one, and that was on a video poker tounmament. In the
previous 12 months
I had 14 , so the last 12 months have been a negitave for me.

In the last 16-17 months, I've had thirteen royal flushes. None
of them came on a one-card draw. Ballparking the numbers here, but I
would guess I've gone some 200 or so one-card draws without
connecting for the big one.
In my rational moments I realize it's nothing more than the
workings of impersonal math. Though sometimes while playing I feel
under the spell of a one-card draw curse, especially during a
session where the machine deals me four to the royal nine times (on
a triple play!) without me completing the royal draw once.

On the 4 to the royal note , in the last 12 months I have at

least (lost

count after 300) around 400 to 500 4 to the royal draws
and have only made one, and that was on a video poker tounmament.

I keep track of the 4TTR streak. The highest one right now is 34
straight playing Bonus and not drawing the needed card. I cannot
imagine streaks in the 100s.

Think of it this way. Imagine playing 100 play and getting 4 to
Royal. It would be not uncommon to get only 1 or even no royals on
the redraw. Getting only one would give a you a royalless streak of
at last 50 (depending on which hand you hit the royal).

I've played some sessions where I have had 4 to royal 3 times in the
session and ended up with only 1 or 2 royals.

Some people are just more talented than others  My wife does better
than me EVERY year.

Last year I had a streak of 199 straight misses and I thought I should
be good for while. But after a couple of hits I'm now on another one of
203 and counting. If that wasn't bad enough I've gone over 15K hands
without even getting dealt a chance :frowning:

Oh my yes, well into the 100's. I had it happen 19 times in one
afternoon! (playing from about 12:30 - 6:00) with bathroom breaks in
between. I have not bothered to keep track of it recently but use
to. My latest tracking is my lack of four of a kinds. Its almost
as though the 4th card has been removed from the deck.

I forgot to mention - I was not playing a muti-line game either. It
was all single lines.

I keep track of the 4TTR streak. The highest one right now is 34
straight playing Bonus and not drawing the needed card. I cannot
imagine streaks in the 100s.

REPLY: Oh good! An invitation to pubicly lament my worst-luck VP
category. I started playing VP in 1994 and did not complete a Royal by
drawing one card until April 2007. Most of those were pre-retirement
years when I only played 10-15 days per year. I have no idea how many
times I whiffed, but the total surely exceeded a thousand and probably
was in the multiple thousands. I finally broke the streak on the 25-
cent 10-7 DB Progressive at the 4 Queens this April ($1,001.50). Since
then I'm 0-32.

Full disclosure: Since 2001, I've had way more than my share of RF's,
including several at $ Pick Em (and one at $2 PE), where RF's are
somewhere near impossible for recreational players. Randomness taketh
away, but randomness giveth -- in the LONG run.

various VP games? More than a few; with the highlight (if one can call
it that) being dealt trip As on DB that did not connect. No 4TTR's.
But I did get two 3TTR's and almost hit the Royal on both. The typical
tease-you-with-one-card-missing draw.
