Bob - I read your article and the best I got from it was you trying to
convince everyone that Winpoker should be considered the standard for
VP playing. Your article was harsh towards Jean's FVP. I own both
programs and they both have their advantages AND disadvantages.
I was trying to get something out of the article this week but just
could not get past the negative comments.

Well, I got a couple of minutes fascination from the discussion of the
different hand distributions generated in the game analysis by the two
programs.
But it was a little disconcerting to see him suggest that his first
suspicion was that the FVP analysis was flawed. Frankly, I would have
thought that the impact of a choice between two equivalent ER holds
would have cropped up in his mind as the more likely source right off
the bat. There's every reason to accord FVP more credibility than he
assigned in his initial take.
But, I'll cut him a break. WinPoker was his and Dean's baby and all
parents are a little blinded by their parenting pride
But it's even more disconcerting to see FVP slighted as being little
more than a pale shadow of WinPoker. There are analytic features that
were truly a godsend. But, more importantly, I think it's the better
tutor.
For myself, WinPoker is my mainstay tool. I've made no bones about
preferring the "look and feel". However, if someone is looking for a
single program with which to get basic strategy of a game down, I
don't hesitate to recommend FVP. Frankly, any tutor that doesn't
permit the user to entirely dispense with penalty card considerations
is inadequate. (No doubt, though, while FVP accomodates "perfect
play" analysis, WinPoker is the more effective tutor in nailing
penalty card decisions.)

Not intentionally so. I indicated that FVP and WinPoker use different
techniques in evaluating the number of final hands, and I showed one
game where that is so. I also said that WinPoker has sold considerably
more copies than FVP. That is also true. Anthony Curtis has told Jean
Scott and me both that the marketplace has declared WinPoker the winner
over FVP.
FVP is a quality product and I have never said otherwise. Many on this
site have a high opinion of it. I use some features on it myself. But
WinPoker continues to be better selling and more people own and use
WinPoker than FVP.
Just because someone doesn't rave about a product you are fond of does
not make their words 'harsh'.

I've got to go along with Bob Dancer on this one. I don't feel his comments were harsh at all.

There would be no way for Anthony to know this since Jim and I do not publicize our total sales. We produce FVP ourselves - and Anthony and other resellers buy from us directly. Therefore, any reseller would know only how many they sold, not our total.
I'm not sure when WinPoker first came out, but obviously WinPoker has had more total sales than we have had since it has been on the market probably around 3 times longer than FVP.
But I'm not in a "race" with anyone. I had used all the previous VP programs on the market and found them very helpful and recommended them in all my writings. I still have them in the resource section of both my books. I have never talked negatively about any of them.
But when Elliot Shapiro (one the FVP beta testers) urged me to look at Jim's software program, I saw that it had many needed features that were not in any program already on the market or you would need to buy two programs to get. It was both a tutor (with a choice to practice "perfect play" or a non-penalty-card simpler strategy) AND could generate strategy charts too. It would let you figure slot club returns and incorporate them into overall payback calculations, change the payoff for individual 4-of-a-kinds to determine the value of quad bonuses (important for card-of-the-day promotions), and calculate session-bankroll needs with a volatility chart, and many other unique features.
So much was offered in this one software program that I thought it was a definitely a candidate for the Frugal name, "frugal" in the true meaning of the word, not cheap, but giving good value for your money. The many words of thanks for this software is more rewarding to me than sales figures.
