You might think you could buy a cashier's check....but banks are strange
animals. One trip we doing pretty well and decided to buy some AE
Traveler's checks so we would not be carrying around so much cash.
We found that banks would not sell us traveler's checks unless we had an
account with them. Ended up having to find an American Express office to
get them.

There is an exchange office across from the Stardust that will sell
you travelers checks at no fee.
