<<<I've had a car reservation for some time now, for travel from LAS to
Laughlin and back for
$168 after taxes for a compact at the weekly rate. All of the car rental
agencies have been
hovering around $160-170. I guess maybe that's not too bad, but it wasn't
that long ago I
was able to get a mid-sized car for $140 (+ or -).
Soooo today, while surfing the usual car rental sites, I decided what the
heck, let's see what
Hotwire has to offer. And BANG! $130 after taxes, a $38 savings through
Avis. Can you
imagine my surprise at getting that rate just one week before the trip?
Maybe that's the
reason.
I've tried Hotwire in the past with only limited results, but they sure came
through this time.>>>
In late April I flew to Phoenix on my first Harrahs Ak-Chin trip & picked up
Ford's replacement for the Taurus for $20/day at the airport. They told me
that it's normally at least twice that much except that I rented it on a
program to take cars from Phoenix to the bay area as they need to transfer cars.
This program may still be active.
Last week, I took AMTRAK to Las Vegas but got off in Barstow even though I
was ticketed to go all the way. That's because I picked up a Hertz rental
(Ford Escape) for $169/week so that I could drive from Barstow to Laughlin
instead of going all the way to LV then renting a car for maybe $10 less. It saved
me a few hours in getting to Laughlin & the return was very easy compared to
LV which is not all that bad. (They recently consolidated the airport's car
rental companies into one location on Gibson & everyone uses the same shuttle
which comes around more frequently than the individual company shuttles of
the past. BTW, Phoenix has the same system.)
Consider renting a car out-of-town if you have occasion to land in any towns
before LV. You might find comparable rates. Competition in LV might keep
rates lowere but local & airport taxes kick them up to almost negate the savings.
