car rentals

Hi,
I will be in LV for the first time in Feb. Is it worthwhile to rent a car for three days or is it best to walk/taxi? Thanks

If you know your way around, a car is nice to have. Having a car allow you to visit those spots that are on the outskirts of town that you've read about but are too expensive to take a cab to. Like the Red Rock, Silverton, M and South Point. You'll also save a lot of money on cab fare if you plan on visiting different places.

So if you don't mind for springing for about $25 a day, having a car at your disposal is a nice thing to have.

It's entirely dependent on what your plans are. If you are staying at a strip hotel, and are interested in seeing a number of the strip properties, then you have several options. If you are up for walking and the weather is not unpleasant, then walking is definitely an alternative. A day pass on the monorail is another good option. If you want to make a trip downtown, a taxi is probably a better option than renting a car. Particularly so if drinking is on your agenda.

If you are staying downtown and don't want to venture out, then there is certainly no need to rent a car. Everything is within easy walking distance.

I think the only time it makes sense to rent a car is when you want to explore some of local casinos, or want to do some sights outside of the strip and downtown. Otherwise in my opinion it's additional hassle and expense. Taxi fares to and from the airport are just so reasonable in my mind to ever consider renting a car just for that.

When I rent in Las Vegas, I use Thrifty. About $14/day ($21/day after taxes).

Place your rental order as early as possible, and check every week to see if the price drops (when you can refare).

I love doing the strip, Red Rock, downtown, etc... so I always get a car (or bring my own).

Vegas car rentals are notorious for socking it to Holiday renters.
what kind of discount coupons /codes were you using ?
I just checked their website, and their cheapest taxes-included-rate for their lowest priced economy car was $43/day !
If you move up to SUV, they wanted $114/day !!!!
This rental period is for 10 days starting Dec 25th from LAS ( las Vegas airport ).
As it stands, using Taxis are going to save me big bucks.
Thanks in advanced .....Tom

The key to Thrifty rentals is reserving way in advance.
Unfortunately this won't help for Xmas. I'll be around 12/26-1/12 if you want a ride somewhere.

Usually I get some kind of 5-10% discount from FlyerTalk.com.
Very occasionally a bigger discount for Hawaii.

I like renting a car in Las Vegas because

a) I know my way around well enough to drive to most places
b) I like hitting someplace new every trip and that usually means taking a ride to a different part of town
c) I like knowing how much my transportation will cost me
d) I like the convenience of not waiting for or having to find a cab
e) I like doing the coupon runs
f) I like having a place to leave a backpack or things I bought without running back to my room.

The less you are going to drive and the less you know the town the more you should lean towards taking cabs.

I have found that after many years of Las Vegas trips, the rental car costs me about $0.75 to $1.00 per mile. Cabs are a lot more than that. Also, being in a traffic jam in a cab and watching the meter continually climb while you don't go anywhere is very frustrating.

If you drink, use taxis.
